A Taste Of Switzerland & The Swiss Chocolate Train
An early summer break to stunning Switzerland by coach
A memorable coach break from Kent taking us to Switzerland, where you can experience the modern-day factual equivalent of Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, sample wonderful Gruyère cheese, hear the gentle chimes of cowbells in the Alpine breeze and gasp in awe as you travel across sparkling mountain ravines on a narrow gauge railway.
Based in the Swiss resort village of Leysin, set high in the Vaud Alps of Switzerland, you will enjoy magnificent views in all directions with snow-capped mountains, rolling green pastures and, below the town, the stunning blue waters of Lake Geneva with Switzerland on one side and France on the other.
Our superb programme of visits is balanced by time to relax and absorb the majestic scenery and clear mountain air. For any of our planned excursion days you can of course alternatively simply enjoy free time at leisure in Leysin. The highlight of the tour is a day out on the Swiss Chocolate Train where you will ride in 1st class comfort with stunning views of the vineyards surrounding Montreux and medieval Gruyères along the way.
Day 1 - Saturday
Following a fairly early start to make our Eurotunnel crossing, we follow the French Autoroute to our overnight stop in the Dijon area where dinner will be served.
Day 2 - Sunday
After breakfast, we make the onward journey with comfort stops on the way. Travel permitting, we will stop in the beautiful Swiss city of Lausanne on the shores of Lake Geneva with time to explore the attractive Ouchy lakeside area, before continuing on to the welcoming 3-star Hotel Central-Residence in Leysin where we will have a welcome drink with time to settle in before a relaxing evening dinner in the traditional restaurant.
Spend all of your time in and around Leysin or join us on our included excursions.
Day 3 - Monday
For our first full day in Switzerland, we explore some of the towns and villages around breathtaking Lake Geneva. We first make our way to the picturesque town of Vevey where you can take a gentle stroll around the town and along the lake shore to marvel at the views across the lake.
At the heart of the vineyard terraces listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the outstanding Lavaux Vinorama introduces you to the wines of this unique Swiss region. Our visit includes entrance and wine tasting.
We then return along the lake shore to the elegant town of Montreux where there will be free time to explore the promenade or make use of the excellent views.
Day 4 - Tuesday
We leave a day free for you to relax and take in the sights of Leysin at your own pace. You may choose to relax at the hotel, making use of its extensive leisure facilities, wander around this mountain village or perhaps make your way to the Berneuse Cable Car, which goes up to the summit of the mountain for perfect views of Geneva and Mont Blanc on a clear day. There is also an excellent value bus service that runs regularly around the village to aid access.
Day 5 - Wednesday
After a relaxing Tuesday, on Wednesday we have a fairly early start as we make our journey to Montreux to board our train for the highlight of our stay. The famous Swiss Chocolate Train winds its way through the majestic mountain countryside of western Switzerland to the lovely town of Broc. Travelling 1st class, en route we enjoy a refreshing morning coffee and croissant whilst taking in the stunning views. On arrival in Broc, we visit the headquarters of Nestlè. Here we visit the famous "World of Chocolate", where the makers provide us with an insight into their history and methods through a short film and factory visit, all topped off with some chocolate sampling. We then rejoin our train and continue to Gruyères with free time for sightseeing or lunch before visiting the fabulous Gruyères Cheese factory.
Day 6 - Thursday
Today, we head across the border to Chamonix via the beautiful mountain road giving us outstanding views as we cross the mountains. This chic mountain resort is excellent, and there are several opportunities for sightseeing including a cable car up the Aiguille du Midi for amazing views of Mont Blanc or the more leisurely glacier railway.
Day 7 - Friday
It is sadly time to bid farewell to our hosts in Switzerland and begin our journey home via our overnight hotel in the Metz area with dinner.
Day 8 - Saturday
On our final day, after breakfast we continue our journey with suitable stops on the way arriving back in Calais for our early-evening return Tunnel crossing.
