Itinerary

  • DAY 1 UK/Selva di Fasano
  • Today you'll depart on your flight to Puglia. On arrival, we'll transfer you to your hotel in the village of Selva di Fasano, which is set amongst wooded hills. Your three-night stay here is on a half-board basis, so after time to settle in, head to the restaurant for dinner this evening.
  • DAY 2 Trani & Castel Del Monte
  • We're going to step back in time on a day of sightseeing, which begins with a walking tour of the picturesque fishing port of Trani. Exclusively for us Trani castle will be brought back to life by a local theatre company who will perform a medieval show about Emperor Frederick II. This is the fascinating figure who commissioned this octagonal masterpiece in the 13th century. The UNESCO-listed medieval Castel del Monte is our next stop this afternoon. This gleaming medieval hilltop castle with Arabic, classical and Gothic influences can be seen for miles around.
  • DAY 3 Cisternino & Alberobello
  • This morning you're heading to the enchanting town of Cisternino, in the Valle d'Itria. Stretch your legs as you take in the sight of whitewashed houses, historic churches and elegant piazzas. Later, the pretty town of Alberobello beckons, and here you'll take a tour of its UNESCO-listed Trulli houses. These traditional whitewashed buildings are topped with conical-shaped roofs and are unique to the area. A special highlight is the chance to step inside one to see how mozzarella is made before you get the chance to make some yourself.
  • DAY 4 Otranto
  • Your new base is the seaside resort of Otranto, where a four-night stay gives you ample time to explore. On the way we're going to visit a masseria. At this fortified farmhouse you'll learn all about traditional country living and also get a lesson on making delicious olive bread. You'll get to try what you've made during an included lunch of local delicacies. On arrival in Otranto, if there's time, you might like to visit its cathedral. Inside you'll see an impressive 12th century mosaic floor, and you can visit the chapel, which houses the remains of 800 martyrs who resisted Turkish occupation.
  • DAY 5 Ceramics & wine tasting
  • A day of discovery begins as you head to a ceramics workshop to watch artisans at work. This is followed by a visit to a winery for a wine-tasting and light lunch.
  • DAY 6 Carpignano, Galatina & Gallipoli
  • You're going to explore a little further afield today in the company of a Local Guide. Firstly you'll view the ancient frescoes in Carpignano Salentino's St Cristina Crypt. Consisting of two underground rooms which have undergone several changes, this important Byzantine crypt retains the oldest frescoes of Puglia, which date from the 10th century. We'll then move on to the basilica and little chapel in the Baroque town of Galatina. This was linked to 'tarantism' in the 15th to 17th centuries when women bitten by poisonous spiders believed the only cure was frenzied dancing accompanied by beating tambourines. It's from this that the Tarantella folk dance evolved. Finally we will head to the coast, where we'll call at the fishing village of Gallipoli. This jewel in the heel of Italy is built on a limestone island and is linked to the mainland by a bridge.
  • DAY 7 Land’s End
  • Today we're going to head to Santa Maria di Leuca, the southernmost point in Puglia. From here we'll be treated to spectacular views. At lunchtime we'll once again find ourselves at a masseria, where as well as local specialities, we'll enjoy live entertainment. This is in the form of the local 'pizzica pizzica' dance, based on the Galatina folk dancing we learned about yesterday.  We'll make our way back to the hotel through a beautiful coastal nature park.
  • DAY 8 Otranto/UK
  • Today we'll transfer you to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
