Itinerary

  • DAYS 1 & 2 UK/Ho Chi Minh City
  • Depart on your flight to Ho Chi Minh City via Bangkok. When you arrive on day 2 we'll transfer you to your hotel in the heart of Vietnam's largest and most energetic city. The evening is yours to spend as you wish. A walk to the nearby Ben Thanh Market area is highly recommended. Here you'll find many restaurants, food stalls and souvenir shops which stay open late into the night.
  • DAY 3 Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Your fascinating morning tour starts with a drive through countryside which was once a stronghold of the Viet Cong. Our destination is the Cu Chi Tunnels, a network of underground passages which acted as supply routes, living quarters and hospitals for guerrilla fighters during the Vietnam War. When we arrive we'll watch a film telling us what life was like for the soldiers living here and then we'll get to explore inside. If you want to discover more about Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, you'll be eager to join our optional tour this afternoon. We'll see highlights including the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral and the Reunification Palace. Tonight we're going to get together for a dinner of pho, an aromatic rice noodle soup, at Pho 2000. This restaurant became well known after former US President Bill Clinton and his entourage dropped by for lunch in 2000. He was the first US president to visit the country since the Vietnam War.
  • DAY 4 Mekong Delta
  • Relax and enjoy the view as we drive to the town of Cai Be, in the Mekong Delta region. The Mekong River descends for 3,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea and is a mass of sampans, barges and houseboats. You'll see snapshots of local life on a cruise along a maze of canals to Vinh Long. Here you'll witness the delicate art of bonsai and visit a handicraft village to see craftsmen at work. Our overnight hotel is in Can Tho, which we reach by road.
  • DAY 5 Can Tho
  • An early start is rewarded by the wonderful sights, sounds and aromas you'll experience at Can Tho's bustling floating market. You'll see boats lined up side by side piled high with household goods, exotic fruits, vegetables and simmering noodles, and hear the cries of traders selling their wares. After your visit there's time to relax as we drive to the sleepy riverside border town of Chau Doc.
  • DAY 6 Phnom Penh
  • Spend the morning travelling by boat to Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, arriving around lunchtime. After checking into your centrally-located hotel we're heading off to visit two very poignant sites. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is housed in the grounds of the former high school. It was taken over by Pol Pot's security forces and converted into notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) in 1975. Inside, photographs and documents chronicle his reign of terror and serve as a memorial to the victims. Your tour then moves on to the infamous Choeung Ek, or Killing Fields. This is the site of the mass grave of some of the one million-plus victims of the Khmer Rouge. You'll see a touching memorial marked by a Buddhist stupa filled with human skulls and bones.
  • DAY 7 Siem Reap
  • You'll see more of Cambodia's picturesque countryside as we make our way to Siem Reap, the gateway to the famous temple complex of Angkor Wat. We'll stop for lunch en route and have time for a spot of relaxation on arrival at our hotel. Perhaps you'll make use of the outdoor pool and spa. If you fancy a walk into town later, there's a good choice of restaurants to choose from.
  • DAY 8 Angkor Wat
  • A day of discovery is in store today as you enter the incredible centuries-old Angkor Wat complex. We'll start at Angkor Thom before moving on to the Bayon Temple, where you'll be greeted by hundreds of carved smiling faces. You can walk to the top of the pyramid-shaped Phimeanakas Temple, or take in the views once surveyed by King Jayavarman VII from the Terrace of the Elephants. Next we'll walk to the north end of the site to discover the Terrace of the Leper King, before taking a short drive to Ta Prohm. Shrouded in dense jungle with giant tree roots crawling over the crumbling ruins, you'll probably agree that this is one of the area's most magical spots. After time back in Siem Reap for lunch if you like, we're going to return to the complex this afternoon to see its crowning glory, Angkor Wat. This massive, three-tiered pyramid rises 65 metres from the ground and is the world's largest religious monument.
  • DAYS 9 & 10 Ho Chi Minh City/UK
  • On day 9 we'll fly back to Ho Chi Minh City for your flight back to the UK via Bangkok, arriving on day 10.
