Immerse yourself in the fascinating history and culture of the heart of Europe on the Danube to Vienna and Budapest river cruise 2017 from The River Cruise Line. With time in Vienna as well as a visit to Budapest, this is a wonderful opportunity to sail the waters immortalised by the composer Strauss in The Blue Danube. We’ll begin our trip at the pretty city of Passau on the Austrian border before making stops at Dürnstein, famous for the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart, and the romantic town of Melk, situated in the Wachau Valley, where you can join an optional excursion to visit the most famous monastic house in Austria, the Benedictine Abbey. Day 1: UK – Germany (Coach & Rail)
We travel by coach or rail to our overnight hotel.
Day 2: Germany – Passau (Coach & Rail) / UK – Passau (Air)
After breakfast we travel by coach or train and board our ship in Passau, known as the ‘three rivers city’ due to its unique location where the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers meet. Those travelling by air join today. You can then relax onboard as we set sail and cruise towards Melk.
Day 3: Melk – Vienna
You can join an optional excursion to visit the most famous monastic house in Austria, the Benedictine Abbey, situated above Melk in the Wachau valley. The remainder of the day can be spent relaxing on board as we sail to Vienna for an overnight stop.
Day 4: Vienna
We spend a whole day in Vienna seeing the key attractions of this city. In the morning you can join our optional city tour and in the afternoon we have an optional excursion to Schönbrunn Palace. In the evening we cast off and cruise towards Budapest.
Day 5: Budapest
Spend time in one of the world’s most beautiful cities and explore both sides of Hungary’s capital – traditional ‘Buda’ and cosmopolitan ‘Pest’. Start with an optional tour to become acquainted with the city and in the evening you can choose to experience Budapest by night on another optional excursion.
Day 6: Budapest
Enjoy free time in Budapest or opt to take our excursion taking you through the sweeping plains of Hungary to Lajosmizse. Here we visit a traditional stud farm and enjoy a tour of the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage, before watching a live Puszta horse show. We then sail to Bratislava.
Day 7: Bratislava
Join our optional walking tour to take in the sights of the Slovakian capital, dominated by its castle, and experience its rich culture. Later in the day we set sail towards Dürnstein.
Day 8: Dürnstein
The town of Dürnstein nestles among Austria’s most famous vineyards and is crowned by the ruins of the castle that once imprisoned Richard the Lionheart. It’s a beautiful place filled with cobbled streets, pretty courtyards and 16th-century houses. After some free time we set sail for the final time and cruise towards Passau.
Day 9: Passau – Germany (Coach & Rail) / UK (Air)
We disembark this morning and travel by coach or train to our overnight hotel. Those travelling by air depart today.
Day 10: Germany – UK (Coach & Rail)
After breakfast we continue by coach to Calais, taking the ferry to Dover for our return journey.
This 4 star ship exudes luxury and style together with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, so you can enjoy an unforgettable cruise experience. Accommodation for 190 passengers is split over three decks which are all accessible by a lift. Excellent service and attention to detail are the priority of the captain and crew who are looking forward to welcoming you on board.
Main Deck cabins on the lower deck feature two small viewing windows, twin beds which are folded away during the day, allowing more space. Amenities include air-conditioning, en suite shower with wc, radio, satellite TV, safe and hairdryer. There is also a small desk and chair. Middle Deck cabins feature large sliding windows, two separate beds that are folded into sofas during the day, giving you space to relax in your cabin during the day. Amenities include air-conditioning, en suite shower with wc, radio, satellite TV, safe and hairdryer. Again there is a small desk and chair. Panorama Deck cabins which are the highest standard cabin aboard the ms Serenity are located on the upper deck and boast a French Balcony offering excellent river views. The cabins feature twin beds that are folded away during the day and amenities include air-conditioning, en suite shower with wc, radio, satellite TV, safe and hairdryer. As with all the other cabins there is a small desk and chair.
The spacious and attractive lounge is located on the main deck and ensures much cosiness on board. It’s a great place to meet your fellow guests and relax as you watch the scenery pass by. Lido Bar A unique feature aboard the ms Serenity is the lovely Lido bar situated to the rear of the Panorama deck which leads out to an outdoor terrace. Here you can sit and enjoy the fresh air whilst socialising over a drink or two!
The spacious Panorama Restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy your included meals, where you are looked after by the highly professional and friendly service team. Meals are served at a single sitting and the menus include international cuisine along with traditional local dishes, freshly prepared by your onboard chef. Sun Deck On the Sun Deck you can enjoy commanding views of the river whilst you relax in comfortable surroundings. The area is equipped with furniture including comfortable lounge chairs and awnings.
