Itinerary

Description

If you head east along the south coast of France, past Nice and the Riviera towns, you come to the Italian province of Liguria, next door to Tuscany. Near the capital, Genoa, is the lovely little Italian Riviera town of Chiavari, with a promenade, old quarter, cafés, boutiques and beaches. It's the perfect base for this 8-day holiday exploring some of the most photogenic sites in all of Italy; Pisa, Santa Margherita, Portofino, Lucca and the legendary Cinque Terre villages.

Air Itinerary

Saturday: Check in at the airport for your flight to Pisa. On arrival we will transfer you to the Hotel Monte Rosa in Chiavari. Because of the historic nature of the town, the coach is only able to get to within about 150 metres of the hotel, but luggage assistance will be provided if needed.

Sunday: Breakfast and then the day is at your leisure until dinner. You may wish to explore Chiavari, which dates back to the 7th century BC. The town is mainly pedestrianised with narrow, winding streets and boutique-style shops, plus beaches and a promenade.

Monday: We set off after breakfast for our full-day excursion by train and boat to Santa Margherita, Portofino and Rapallo. We walk the short distance (850m or around ½  mile) to the railway station and take the local train to Santa Margherita, an elegant resort with grand and ornate hotels, million-dollar yachts and a picture-perfect seaside promenade. From here we take a boat along the coast to Portofino, with verdant hills cascading down to a jostle of exuberantly-coloured palazzi crowded round a tiny harbour. We continue by boat to Rapallo, set within the National Park, with its castle, historic centre and promenade, then return to Chiavari by train.

Tuesday: Breakfast, then we depart by coach for our day out to Pisa and Lucca. In Pisa we visit the famous walled Piazza dei Miracoli, which is dominated by the magnificent medieval cathedral and its 12th-century leaning campanile bell tower, one of the world's most famous monuments. From here we travel on to Lucca, dripping with history and famous for its intact Renaissance walls enclosing a cobbled centre in classic Roman grid-iron fashion, with a piazza still in the shape of the original amphitheatre.

Wednesday: Breakfast and then the day is at leisure. If you're in the mood for a trip out of town, Genoa (Genova) is just along the coast and easy to get to by train.

Thursday: Breakfast, then we walk to the railway station for our excursion to the Cinque Terre, a quintet of the most photographed villages in the world, where the houses are packed and stacked closely round small harbours, Portofino-style, or else scrambled in disarray onto rocky coastal perches. We first go by train to Manarola, then by boat to Vernazza, traffic free and perhaps the most unchanged of the villages. We continue by boat to Monterosso, part old town and part new, and the only one of the five to have its own beach and seafront promenade. We return to Chiavari by train in time for dinner.

Friday: Breakfast and then another day at leisure until dinner.

Saturday: Breakfast and then we transfer to Pisa airport for your flight home. As before, the coach will stop around 150 metres from the hotel, and luggage assistance will be provided if required.

Please note: This holiday includes a substantial amount of walking, so may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. The coach is only able to get to within 150m of the hotel, and the railway station is 850m away.
