Join us for the Geminids meteor shower – an annual highlight of the night sky calendar. Active between 4th and 17thof December, the shower reaches its peak on the night of the 13th and 14th when its zenithal hourly rate reaches 120 meteors per hour.
For the best views a dark, clear location is essential which is why we have selected an observing site at the Parador Hotel in the spectacular Teide National Park on the island of Tenerife. Here the skies are dark and often clear, offering spectacular views of the stars and constellations.
Geminid meteors are of medium speed and sometimes incredibly bright. The shower offers an unforgettable experience for visual observers as well as a great opportunity for astrophotographers to obtain photographs of elusive meteor trails. Meteor showers are best seen with the naked eye and require no specialist equipment to view.
Our expert astronomer on this trip will be TV presenter and award winning astrophotographer Pete Lawrence. He will be on hand to tell you all about the Geminids, how to observe them and offer guidance on how to photograph them. Set against the incredible volcanic landscape surrounding Mount Teide and with an excellent chance of clear skies, this is one astronomical highlight you really won’t want to miss.
Check in for our flight. On arrival, we are met and transferred to the Grand Muthu Golf Plaza Hotel & Spa in San Miguel de Abona. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Breakfast first, then we board the coach for the transfer to our sky-watching hotel in Teide National Park. In the afternoon Pete provides an informative talk about the Geminids. After dinner we head outside and, in the marvellous dark sky of the area around Mount Teide, relax and enjoy watching for the Geminids which are forecast to be active tonight and tomorrow. Pete is on hand to guide us around the night sky and to help with any astrophotography questions and techniques.
A leisurely start after your late night, then after breakfast we have free time to explore our resort. In the afternoon Pete will review the previous night’s activities and prepare us for another night viewing the Geminids. After dinner we head outside again to enjoy another superb show courtesy of nature.
Another relaxed start, then a final breakfast and a last opportunity to explore this unique area before boarding the coach for the transfer back to San Miguel de Abona and our hotel, Grand Muthu Golf Plaza Hotel & Spa.
