Included Excursions

Powis Castle and Gardens (full day)

On our first full day excursion, we travel to Powis Castle, once described as ‘the most magnificent castle in Wales,’ and well known for its formal gardens and rare collection of beautiful art and artefacts. Now under the care of the National Trust, this tall castle has a rich history, from border fortress to aristocratic country house. Built in the 13th century, we discover the inspiring treasures on display inside this medieval grand fortress while outside, we can explore the beautiful 25-acre gardens, terraces and an orangery attributed to architect William Winde.

Aberystwyth & Elan Valley Visitor Centre (full day)

Today we journey to Aberystwyth through the awe-inspiring Cambrian Mountains. The Cambrian Mountains have been dubbed the ‘Green Desert of Wales’ in reference to its sparseness of population and is one of the few remote areas of wilderness left in Southern Britain. The area is one of outstanding natural beauty and known for its reservoirs and lakes, green-tinged peaks and lush valleys.

Next, we arrive in Aberystwyth, a thriving seaside town known for its rugged coastline. We finish the day at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre, set against a magnificent Victorian stone dam and featuring an excellent exhibition and audio-visual show about the history and wildlife of the area.

Judge’s Lodgings (half day)

We make our way to the small border town of Presteigne in the very heart of Wales. Here we have the chance to see the world through the eyes of a traditional Victorian judge, with entry to the Judge’s Lodgings, a fascinating Victorian museum that showcases the ‘upstairs downstairs’ world of a judge’s private apartments, complete with the servant’s quarters, courthouse and basement cells below.

In this audio walking tour, we learn about Reverend Richard Lister Venables, Chairman of the Magistrates, as he reminisces about the changes he has seen in his lifetime. In the courtroom, hear the trial of William Morgan, local duck thief, find out about the tragic hanging of Mary Morgan and hear echoes of past souls, like grumbling housekeeper Mr Luggar and Mary the hard-working maid.
