Hexham
HexhamThe beautiful and ancient market town of Hexham lies on the banks of the River Tyne in Northumberland and offers plenty of fascinating history, stunning architecture, picturesque parks and independent shops.
Hexham Abbey is the centrepiece of the town and has been a site of worship for over 1,300 years. The abbey originated as a monastery, founded in 674, although much of the current abbey dates from the 11th century onwards. The crypt of the original monastery survives, and incorporates some of the stones from the Roman ruins of nearby Hadrian’s Wall.
Other historic buildings in the town include the Moot Hall, the covered market, and the Old Gaol, one of the first purpose-built jails in England. Dating back to the 14th century, it now houses a museum which tells the story of Hexham’s history.
The quaint and quirky medieval streets are lined with a fantastic range of interesting shops, galleries and restaurants.
