Itinerary

Day 1

Fly into Edinburgh and meet your Tour Manager before transferring to your hotel. Check in and then enjoy a couple of hours free to relax or explore the nearby riverside walks, before taking dinner at your hotel.

Day 2

Board your first train in Inverness, bound for Kyle of Lochalsh. Rolling out of the station to begin its scenic journey, the train hugs the edge of the Beauly Firth. Take in the views of the 'Black Isle' before we come to Dingwall, and then head west and ascend through the starkly beautiful northern Highlands. We'll pass the Torridon Hills before descending towards the jaw-dropping beauty of Loch Carron.

Day 3

The air is filled with the evocative smells of steam rail, today, as the Strathspey Steam Railway passes through pristine Highland scenery on its nine-and-a-half-mile journey to Aviemore. Once here you're free to explore until the time comes to head home.

Day 4

Our last rail journey takes us along a 42-mile stretch of the West Highland Line to Mallaig. Cross the Glenfinnan viaduct's 21 arches, look out towards the wind-swept Isle of Skye and pass the white sands of Morar. At Mallaig, the day's destination, explore the heritage centre and walk the Mallaig Circuit to make the most of its spectacular views out over Mallaig harbour and across Loch Nevis to Knoydart.

Day 5

Join the coach as you transfer back to Edinburgh for your homeward flight. If time allows, you may be able to explore some of this historic city prior to departure. Back to top

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately three hours.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Train journeys

Please note, the West Highland and Kyle lines are both scheduled ScotRail services, and use diesel-powered engines. In the unlikely event of a steam locomotive breaking down on the Strathspey Railway, we reserve the right to substitute the engine with a diesel locomotive. All train journeys are single journeys.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.
