Midsummer Sunshine

Witness one of the world’s most unusual sights – the sun dipping to the horizon without actually setting – on this unforgettable cruise to northern Norway. Board Marco Polo in Tilbury to sail to Norway’s Viking capital, Trondheim, and cross the Arctic Circle to visit the part port, part ski resort city of Narvik beneath Fagernesfjellet's snow-capped peak. Further north still you’ll discover the stunning Arctic scenery of Svalbard, cruise up Billefjord to the abandoned mining town of Pyramiden beneath the Nordenskiöldbreen glacier, and call at Barentsberg and Longyearbyen (the world’s most northerly town).Back on the Norwegian mainland you’ll have the chance to visit the North Cape Hall visitor centre at Nordkapp on an optional shore excursion from Honningsvaag, and enjoy yet more relaxed days and long evenings at sea as Marco Polo cruises south along the vast coastal landscape of the fjordlands. Stop at the entrance of spectacular Geirangerfjord to explore the Art Nouveau city of Alesund, and spend a day in Bergen, Norways’ second city and the unofficial capital of the fjords.

Day 4

Trondheim, Norway
Arrive: 0800hrs Depart: 2000hrs Beautiful Trondheim, picturesquely set between a loop in the River Nid and stunning Trondheimsfjord, welcomes us this morning. Soak up the atmosphere of a city that was once the capital of Viking Norway. Explore the imposing Nidaros cathedral, the restored Archbishop’s Palace, and the impressive Stiftsgarden, which is now a royal residence.

Day 6

Narvik, Norway
Arrive: 0800hrs Depart: 1700hrs The modern, friendly port and ski-resort of Narvik welcomes Marco Polo, today. Take the opportunity to join an optional excursion, and catch the cable car to the heights of Fagernesfjellet mountain for some truly spectacular views.

Day 8

Longyearbyen, Norway
Arrive: 1300hrs Depart: 2000hrs Today we’ll reach Spitsbergen the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago, a place ice-bound for all but high summer, and covered by glaciers and frozen tundra. The largest settlement, Longyearbyen, has some 3000 hardy inhabitants, and is the starting point for excursions into an Arctic wilderness a world away from the rest of Europe.

Day 9

Barentsburg, Norway
Arrive: 0700hrs Depart: 1900hrs Barentsburg, a tiny Russian outpost on the edge of Grønfjorden, where all 400-odd inhabitants live in the same Soviet era apartment block, is actually Svalbard's second largest town. Step ashore to explore this fascinating relic of the Cold War that is now working hard to evolve from its coal-mining roots (it's now home to the world's most northerly microbrewery).

Day 11

Honningsvag, Norway
Arrive: 1600hrs Depart: 0200hrs (Day 12) Today Marco Polo docks in the pretty, remote village of Honningsvaag. Join an optional excursion to the famous visitor centre at Nordkapp, almost at Europe’s northernmost point. You’ll return to the ship, passing Europe’s true north tip at Knivskjellodden, before Marco Polo continues south.

Day 14

Alesund, Norway
Arrive: 0700hrs Depart: 1430hrs Marco Polo’s next port is Alesund. Here you’ll find a beautiful natural harbour, a waterfront lined with tall, pastel-painted buildings, and insights into the history and heritage of the region on a visit to the fascinating Sunnmore Museum.

Day 15

Stavanger, Norway
Arrive: 0930hrs Depart: 1800hrs The prosperous former fishing capital of Stavanger, its sleek modern buildings contrasting with the white-painted, clapboard houses of its old town, is Marco Polo’s final Norwegian landfall. Step ashore to wander before we enjoy the breathtaking passage though Lysefjord, where the towering Preikestolen rock formation soars above the waters.

Day 17

Arrive back at London Tilbury
Arrive: 0800hrs Back to top
