Day TwoEnjoy this morning’s guided tour, which will bring to life over two thousand years of history. Take in the Colosseum and the Forum, the basilicas of the early Christian Church, and the Baroque fountains into which many a coin has been thrown. In the Vatican City on the Tiber’s west bank, the great dome of St Peter’s looks over the vast Square. After the tour, do in Rome what the Romans do – walk! There’s so much to see and do, and no matter in which direction you wander, there’s something of interest to catch your eye. Perhaps return to the city’s ancient heart , to climb the Vittorio Emanuele monument and look down on the five acres that once had dominion over the known world. Or explore the Capitoline Museums’ priceless treasures, which include Greco-Roman statuary and Renaissance masterpieces. Rest awhile in the museum bar - the views are breath-taking! Walk north along the famous Via del Corso and head west, through the labyrinthine streets leading into famed Piazza Navona and Emperor Hadrian’s awe-inspiring Pantheon. Or head east to the famous Spanish Steps and the legendary Trevi Fountain, where the ‘beautiful people’ still gather. Perhaps tarry here, enjoying pizza on the hoof – a great Roman pleasure – or a more formal dinner, before returning to the hotel.
Day ThreeEnjoy another full day of Roman delights, perhaps crossing the Tiber to explore the Vatican Museums and view Bernini’s Baldacchino and Michelangelo’s moving Pièta in St Peter’s. Marvel at the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s frescoes.. On a sunny day, wander around the beautiful gardens surrounding the Villa Borghese. This evening, why not crown your Roman visit by dining in Trastevere, home to restaurants serving traditional Roman cuisine?
Day FourBid “arrivederci, Roma”, boarding the coach to travel north, pausing in stunning, hill-top Orvieto, crowned by its Gothic cathedral. Enjoy a guided tour, and then perhaps lunch in one of the countless cafes, or a glass of crisp Orvieto Classico in one of the many wine bars. You’ll then continue on to Chianciano Terme, where your hotel for the next five nights, and dinner, await you.
Day FiveA relaxed day sees you head into Umbria, where highlights will include beautiful Lake Trasimeno, Italy’s fourth largest body of water, and breath-taking Gubbio, with its rose-coloured houses, ancient churches and palazzi, all set against a beautiful mountain backdrop. Enjoy the chance to wander and perhaps a leisurely lunch, before returning to Chianciano for the evening.
Day SixThis morning, rest and relax in the hotel or explore famed Chianciano, where the modern town surrounding the ancient baths sits overlooked by the hill settlement in its strategic setting above the plains. After lunch at the hotel, journey to exquisite Florence to enjoy a guided tour, taking in the magnificent skyline dominated by the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral. Marvel at the splendours of Santa Croce and the beautiful Ponte Vecchio bridge. The chance to take dinner in one of a host of Florentine eateries, or simply to wander the timeless streets, will complete a perfect day.
Day SevenToday is free to enjoy all the delights of Chianciano, the hotel and its surroundings. The hotel and the Tourist Office will extol the virtues of the various treatments available, should you wish to add a little rejuvenation to your holiday pleasures.
Day EightA final day is one to savour, whether spent at leisure in Chianciano, or on the optional excursion to ancient Perugia, and to Assisi, birthplace of Italy’s patron Saint, and Italy’s most famous hilltown. The Basilica of St Francis is Umbria’s greatest glory, home to one of the world’s finest art collections. The renowned frescoes, especially those in the Upper Church, reflect the life of the most saintly of all the saints. A last dinner is enjoyed at the hotel, reliving the memories of the past wonderful week.
