Day 1Meet your tour manager at Dublin Airport and transfer to your hotel in Enniscorthy. Depending on your time of arrival, you may have time to make the short walk into the town centre, perhaps to explore the historic Vinegar Hill, site of the 1798 eponymous battle, or find a quiet riverside café or bar, beneath the imposing 16th-century castle, to sit down and watch the world go by with a drink in hand.
Day 2Join your tour manager today for a fascinating tour of Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford. Founded in 914 by the Vikings, parts of Waterford’s ancient walled core remain intact today, including Reginald’s Tower, an impressive 11th-century fortification. Your tour manger will tell you more about the city’s history before you continue to the factory of famed local glass manufacturer, Waterford Crystal, which opened its doors in 1783. Enjoy an illuminating tour of the factory, before you continue to the adjacent Bishop’s Palace, which documents the city’s fascinating Georgian history with displays dating back 250 years, spread over two elegant floors. This afternoon the tour continues to Dunmore East, roughly 30 minutes’ drive away. Located on a secluded cove, Dunmore East is a pretty fishing village, popular with local artists. Spend some time exploring the quaint winding lanes and the pretty harbourside, lined in places with thatched roof buildings, before returning to your hotel.
Day 3Today’s included tour begins with a visit to Dunbrody Famine Ship & Museum at New Ross in Wexford County. Located on a replica 1840s ship, modelled on vessels the Irish used to emigrate during the Great Famine, the museum tells the story of this difficult time. New Ross was also the ancestral family home of former US President, John F Kennedy. He visited the town in 1963, and in 2008, his sister, Jean Kennedy Smith, unveiled a commemorative statue of him here. Your tour manager will tell you all about the Kennedy family’s connection with the area. The tour continues along a stunning stretch of coast, as you drive through Ireland’s Sunny South East, past the Kennedy Homestead, birthplace of John F Kennedy’s great-grandfather, Patrick. Continue to Hook Head Lighthouse, which is the second-oldest operating lighthouse in the world, after Spain’s Tower of Hercules, where a tour is given.
Day 4After breakfast this morning, join your tour manager for an excursion to the ‘Fair City’, Dublin. An included tour introduces you to this fascinating city, after which you can spend time exploring under your own steam. Perhaps you’ll begin your exploration at the historic College Green where Vikings founded the city, and home to Trinity College, Ireland’s foremost seat of learning as well the location of to the ancient Celtic manuscript The Book of Kells. The nearby National Museum displays priceless Viking artefacts. You may choose to head to the much-modernised Temple Bar area, the height of Dublin fashion, with its boutiques and trendy restaurants. Don’t miss Dublin Castle, or Christ Church and St Patrick’s cathedrals, all of which are remnants of the city’s Norman occupation. St Patrick’s pays homage to the writer Jonathan Swift. You should also consider an optional visit to the seven-storey Guinness Storehouse, where you can learn all about the ubiquitous ‘black stuff’, and of course enjoy a pint and the wonderful views from the Gravity Bar.
Day 5Join your tour manager today for a fascinating exploration of Kilkenny. The tour begins at the town’s famous castle, strategically located on the banks of the River Nore and built in 1195 after the Norman conquest of Ireland. The tour will bring the castle’s long and varied history to life, before you continue to the 13th-century Gothic St Canice Cathedral, also known as Kilkenny Cathedral. Enjoy a stroll around this impressive cathedral, before taking a break for lunch at your leisure in the town centre, where you’ll find many appealing cafés and restaurants. This afternoon you may choose to visit Smithwick’s Brewery this afternoon (entrance payable locally). Located in the town centre, the brewery has been making beer since 1710, and brews a distinctive red ale-style beer called Smithwick’s, one of Ireland’s most-popular beers.
Day 6After breakfast, check-out and transfer to Dublin Airport for your return flight at the end of a wonderful few days in Ireland’s ancient east. Back to top
