Day 1Fly to Madrid, where you will meet your friendly tour manager upon arrival. Transfer to Ávila. The rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure, resting and relaxing as you acclimatise to your new surroundings, before dinner is served at the parador.
Day 2Join your tour manager for a guided tour of the magnificent Spanish capital, including the bustling Puerta del Sol, located in the oldest part of the city, an area known as Madrid de los Austrias after the Hapsburg kings who once ruled here. Take in the elegant Calle Mayor – the city’s medieval ‘Main Street’ – and magnificent Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s great meeting place, a vast square enclosed by grand, colonnaded buildings, including the ornate Casa de la Panaderia (bakery). Madrid is famous for its shops, and you’ll have the chance to pick up some last-minute Christmas gifts, perhaps from the city’s Christmas Market. Restaurants, open-air cafés – ideal spots in which to rest awhile over a coffee or beer – and bookstalls surround the statue of Philip III at the plaza’s centre. Further west, past the old Town Hall and the ancient buildings of the Plaza de la Villa, you may choose to discover the gargantuan Palacio Real, or Royal Palace. With its 3,000 rooms, immense library and extraordinary opulence, the Palace is high on the list of most visitors’ ‘must-see’ lists. Return to Ávila for dinner.
Day 3Merry Christmas! After breakfast, join your tour manager for a familiarisation tour of Ávila on foot, bringing this stunningly well-preserved and compact city, one of Spain’s finest, to life. The fortified city, once a medieval stronghold, is home to eight gates, 88 watchtowers and over 25,000 turrets, dating back as far as the 12th Century. The city’s rich religious heritage is clear to see, with an exceptionally high number of churches inside the city walls. A three-course Christmas lunch will be served at your hotel in the early afternoon. Spend the rest of your afternoon at leisure, perhaps relaxing in one of the hotel’s snug lounge areas or continuing your exploration of Ávila under your own steam before dinner this evening.
Day 4Today you may choose to either join an optional excursion to Salamanca or spend your last full day in Spain relaxing in your parador. Salamanca is home to what was once one of the world’s most respected universities. A treasure-chest of stunningly ornate Baroque buildings, their façades carved in golden sandstone, with one virtually surrounding the truly exquisite Plaza Mayor, the vast open space that is the city’s hub and heartbeat, Salamanca exudes charm from every pore. Radiating away from this central point in loops, its southern side marked by the Río Tormes, the remainder marked by the former route of the city walls, Salamanca is a delight, in which to simply wander. Don’t miss the two sumptuous cathedrals, nor the famous Casa de las Conchas, the ‘House of Shells’ that is the city’s most photographed building. Return to Ávila for a last evening in the city, and for dinner at the parador.
Day 5Bid farewell to Ávila and transfer to Madrid Airport for the return flight, at the end of a marvellous Christmas spent in the true heart of Spain. Back to top
