Itinerary

Day One

Travel to Edinburgh, meet your Tour Manager at the airport, and transfer to your hotel. After check-in, the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore the secluded glens and riverside walks of the surroundings before dinner at the hotel.

Day Two

Today we'll follow the stunningly scenic route from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh. The line travels along the south side of Beauly Firth, with views across to the 'Black Isle', before turning north to the market town of Dingwall. From there it heads west, climbing through the remote northern Highlands, past towering Liathach and its Torridon mountain neighbours. The final stage is the most spectacular - as the line descends to the magnificent scenery of Loch Carron.

Day Three

Our second excursion is a nostalgic trip on the Strathspey Steam Railway. The nine-and-a-half-mile journey through unspoilt Highland scenery ends in Aviemore, where you're free to explore. You may also like to join our optional excursion on the Cairngorm Mountain Railway, the UK's longest funicular, which is renowned for its magnificent views.
N.B. The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is closed for maintenance throughout June. On all departures in June therefore, you will visit the open air Highland Folk Museum where you will get a real insight into the living and working conditions of the Highlands in the past

Day Four

Our final trip takes us 42 miles along the dramatic West Highland Line to Mallaig, overlooking the Isle of Skye. We'll cross the spectacular 21-arch Glenfinnan viaduct and rumble past the white sands of Morar. Once in Mallaig you can walk the hills or explore the Heritage Centre.

Day Five

Transfer back to Edinburgh. Depending on your departure time, there may be time to explore this beautiful city before you begin your journey home.

Further Information

Hotel transfer times

The transfer time from the airport to your hotel is approximately three hours.

Combining hotel transfers

We sometimes need to combine transfers to and from your hotel. We always try to keep any wait to a minimum, but you may be asked to wait at the airport for up to an hour, while other incoming flights arrive, before the transfer to your hotel. Similarly, we may need to transfer you back to the airport up to three hours before your flight home departs.

Train journeys

Please note, the West Highland and Kyle lines are both scheduled ScotRail services, and use diesel-powered engines. In the unlikely event of a steam locomotive breaking down on the Strathspey Railway, we reserve the right to substitute the engine with a diesel locomotive. All train journeys are single journeys.

Special requirements

If you have notified us of any special requirements, please check that they have been noted and acknowledged. This is especially important with any dietary needs you may have.

Disabled access

The majority of our tours involve a certain amount of walking, including a short walk from the coach stop to the town, attraction or venue you're visiting. If you are bringing a wheelchair, please let us know at the time of booking so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Itinerary changes

Occasionally, for operational reasons, we may have to change the order of the excursions on your holiday. The final day-by-day itinerary will be confirmed on your Final Travel Documents, which you will receive approximately three weeks prior to your departure.

Airport development fees

An Airport Development Fee has been introduced at a few UK Airports. You will be required to pay this charge at the following airports prior to checking in for your flight: Blackpool, Durham Tees Valley, Newquay and Norwich. The amount varies from airport to airport, but it is generally between GBP5 and GBP10 per person. Please visit the airport's website for further information.
