“Victoria’S” Highlands: Castles, Whisky & Steam
2018 - Fishers Hotel - 7 Days (AUD0161)
Get back to nature with this tour showcasing some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery that Scotland has to offer. Based in Pitlochry, just south of The Cairgorms National Park you will experience this National Park and the beautiful Spey Valley, we also visit Blair Castle and the Royal Yacht Britannia, ride on the Strathspey Railway and enjoy ‘a wee dram’ at the Aberfeldy Distillery. On the way, you will call in at Gretna Green, famous for its reputation for those looking to elope for generations!
Pitlochry is a bustling tourist town and has been welcoming visitors for over 170 years. The name comes from the Gaelic “Pit Cloich Aire”, meaning “place of the Sentinel Stone” and it was originally a Pictish settlement. The town is justifiably proud of its Victorian heritage and tourism traditions, and offers visitors much to enjoy. It is the ideal holiday destination for those who love Scotland’s hills and heritage, while its central position and easy accessibility by road, rail and bus, make it a perfect touring base for visiting Scotland’s other delights.
PLEASE NOTE: Price is per person and based on two people sharing a twin/double room. Single room supplements and upgrades are not included.
Fishers Hotel, Pitlochry
In the heart of Pitlochry since 1830, the 3* Fishers Hotel enjoys a unique setting within the town. It has the convenience of a town centre location, yet with an aura of peace and tranquillity that comes from 2 acres of prize-winning gardens to the rear. Many of the hotel’s bedrooms enjoy views of the garden and surrounding mountains whilst the restaurant overlooks the town square. All the bedrooms are en-suite with TV and tea / coffee making. There is a lift to most floors.
After joining the coach, we head towards our hotel for an overnight stay. Check in later this evening with dinner and overnight accommodation.
Days 2 - 6
Traditional Scottish breakfast followed by free time and included excursions.Dinner and entertainment at the hotel. On Day 6, we depart our mainstay and make our way to our overnight hotel.
After breakfast we make our way home. After stopping for a coffee/lunch break, we continue homewards.
Aberfeldy & Whisky Tour
A fabulous day out with plenty to do and see. We first make for Aberfeldy. Lying on the shores of Scotland’s longest river, the River Tay, Aberfeldy has spectacular views of the Falls of Moness and is home to the Aberfeldy Distillery. As it would be rude not to stop whilst we are passing, we thought we’d take a Distillery Tour with a tasting in the whisky lounge.
Loch Tummel & Blair Castle – Queen Victoria’s favourite!
After our visit to Aberfeldy, we journey on to discover Loch Tummel and Blair Atholl, where we’ll pay a visit to Blair Castle (you may have seen it recently on ‘Victoria’ (Episode 7)). Queen Victoria visited Blair Castle many times over her reign and clearly loved being in Scotland. The Castle still houses items of furniture and other personal belongings of Victoria which were here during her time staying in Blair Atholl. We finish the outing on a royal note with a stop at ‘Queens View’ at the head of Loch Tummel, the classic and much photographed viewpoint where Queen Victoria picnicked in 1866.
Aviemore & A Ride on The Strathspey Steam Railway
We travel to Aviemore for a ride on the Strathspey Railway, a heritage steam railway that runs for 10 miles across heather-covered moorland with the Cairngorm Mountains behind. We depart Pitlochry this morning and head for the hills. We board the train at Aviemore Station, and travel on to Boat of Garten, also known as the ‘Osprey Village’ before heading on to Broomhill Station, or ‘Glenbogle’ as fans of the popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen will know it! As we travel over moorland, forest and past great sweeps of the River Spey, the Cairngorm Mountains provide a backdrop to the scene which, together with the hot oil, smoke and steam form the ingredients of a grand day out.
The Royal Yacht Britannia
On board Scotland’s most popular visitor attraction you will discover what life was like on board Her Majesty’s floating Royal residence and follow in the footsteps of world leaders such as Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Rajiv Gandhi
