Plymouth - Discover Britain's Ocean City
INCLUDED Visitor DestinationPlymouth's historic waterfront tells the story of a city that changed the world, where centuries of naval heritage created a destination of global significance.
The Barbican forms Plymouth's beating heart, where cobbled streets and Tudor buildings create an atmospheric journey through 600 years of maritime history. The famous Mayflower Steps mark where the Pilgrims departed in 1620, whilst narrow streets reveal independent shops, galleries, and traditional pubs. Fresh seafood restaurants line the waterfront, offering exceptional dining with harbour views that capture Plymouth's maritime soul.
Sutton Harbour seamlessly blends working fishing port authenticity with contemporary marina elegance. Watch fishing boats unload their catch alongside luxury yachts, whilst restaurants and bars offer front-row seats to this maritime theatre. Boat trips depart regularly for harbour cruises and dolphin watching expeditions.
The Hoe provides one of Britain's most spectacular coastal viewpoints. This expansive plateau offers panoramic views across Plymouth Sound, where Sir Francis Drake allegedly finished his bowls game before defeating the Spanish Armada. The iconic Smeaton's Tower lighthouse and Royal Naval Memorial stand proudly above the dramatic coastline.
From the Mayflower's voyage to Captain Cook's expeditions, Plymouth's streets echo with exploration stories. The National Marine Aquarium, Royal Citadel, and maritime museums provide fascinating heritage insights, whilst the working naval base confirms Plymouth remains Britain's premier naval port.
