Bury and East Lancashire Steam
Historically, Bury was a mill town which centred on textile production and it was in fact the Brooksbottom Mill in Summerseat which launched Bury’s role in the cotton industry. Industry increased for the area when the town was connected to the national canal system by the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal in the early nineteenth century. This is a fascinating place, with lovely people and an award winning market. The line runs from Bury for 12 miles through scenic Lancastrian landscapes - beautiful rural panoramas and postcard pretty villages to bustling Victorian towns and cotton mill dotted horizons. With a storied history stretching back to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the East Lancashire Railway is the steam powered heart of the Irwell Valley, pumping goods and people around the region for nearly 200 years!
Lancaster Canal Cruise and Oswaldtwistle Mills
We take a calming cruise along the Lancaster Canal and over the splendid Lune Aqueduct. From atop the aqueduct you can see for miles around, the perfect place to take in the wonderful scenery and stunning views of Lancaster's skyline. We then head into the city of Lancaster itself for some free time to explore.
Afterwards, we move on to Oswaldtwistle Mills where we will have some free time. The former Weaving Mill has over 100 retailers all under one roof, 5 Restaurants, Ice Cream Parlour, extensive Home, Lifestyle & Garden Centre, Mill Grounds, Craft Centre, Textile and Heritage Museum and even it’s own Wildfowl Reserve.
