One of the great well-preserved Georgian cities in the UK, Chichester has played a key role in the affairs of Sussex since at least Roman times. Today, it is the prosperous administrative capital of West Sussex and a great place for shopping, but it’s hard to avoid Chichester’s links to its illustrious past. The city centre’s broad streets are packed with listed buildings, headed by the towering presence of Chichester Cathedral, now home to a family of peregrine falcons who can be heard as they swoop over the city at dusk. The pedestrianised city centre is neatly enclosed within the ancient city walls and this helps to make Chichester compact and pleasant to explore on foot.
Quirky, fun and cosmopolitan, the modern market town of Arundel in West Sussex, is full of history and heritage, contemporary culture and fantastic leisure pursuits. Many people will know Arundel for two famous landmarks, Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral, which dominate its impressive skyline. Shop at independent retailers, antique markets and art galleries in the Georgian and Victorian town centre or eat out overlooking the River Arun in a pretty waterside pub, café or restaurant.
Petersfield on Market Day
Set in the glorious countryside of the South Downs National Park, Petersfield is an ancient market town originally built as a Norman 'new town' at the end of the 11th Century. It is now a vibrant place for shopping and eating out. The main square is an attractive focal point providing the perfect venue for twice weekly markets on Saturdays and Wednesdays. At its centre stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King William III. The Church of St. Peter dates back to 1120 and retains many original features.
