On arrival at the lovely seaside town of Scarborough you will have time to check into your centrally located hotel and relax before dinner. With splendid views over North Bay you may enjoy a stroll overlooking the sea to get your bearings of this scenic and traditional resort, and work up an appetite (although a quick ice cream won't hurt, and you are at the seaside!)

There is plenty of time to explore Scarborough and all its sights and sounds, from the lively town centre, two lovely sandy bays, quaint harbour and old town to the thrills of Luna Park and the Cliff Tramways. Make sure you have time to enjoy your fantastic excursions to historic York with a guided tour bringing its ancient walls and residents to life, and characterful Whitby for an older atmospheric seaside experience.

Day 4

After an amazing action filled weekend, it is time to say farewell to Yorkshire today, heading south and homewards. Relax and reflect on this warm and friendly county and the history, fun and wonderful experiences you have enjoyed.

Whitby (half day)

INCLUDED Visitor DestinationWhitby is an ancient port with a fascinating history, a ruined abbey overlooking the town, and a working harbour. It also has sandy beaches, donkey rides and rock pools, not to mention some of the best fish and chips in the world! It is easy to see why Bram Stoker found it the perfect location for his novel Dracula in 1897, and the town has not changed a lot since then. The River Esk flows north through the centre of the town dividing it into East and West Sides, linked by the renowned ”swing-bridge”. Whitby Abbey, St Mary’s Parish Church and the picturesque ‘old town’ lie on the East Side, while the West Side of the town has some equally historic fishermen's cottages, hidden in traditional yards behind the fish market and main shopping streets. Slightly further away from the noise and bustle of the harbour are many fine Georgian townhouses, built during Whitby’s most prosperous era in the days of sail. They cluster around the delightful Pannett Park, also home to the town Museum and Art Gallery. The town's most famous explorer Captain James Cook is commemorated with a bronze Whalebone Arch, and the fashionable spa resort was loved by Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens. We are sure you will love it too!
