Durham

INCLUDED Visitor DestinationEnjoy your visit to the handsome and historical university city of Durham. Bill Bryson called it ‘a perfect little city’ and Conde Nast readers voted it ‘Best city in the UK’. After our own visit, we entirely agree – Durham is a very special place, and we just had to include it in your experience. The first sight of the city alone is breath-taking. Inside the city you will find an abundance of impressive historical buildings and sights include the 11th-century fairy-tale turreted castle, the university’s Botanic Garden and the highlight of the city’s skyline, the magnificent Norman-era Durham Cathedral (which plays a role in Harry Potter, and you will immediately see why), all have the words 'World Heritage Site' written all over them. This majestic north east city is a historical treasure trove; the castle nestles by the riverside, parks thrive with deer, and living museums radiate with industrial heritage, but that’s just a taste of the best places to visit in Durham. You can find out for yourself!

Newcastle

INCLUDED Visitor DestinationUnited by seven iconic bridges across a bustling Quayside, Newcastle and Gateshead form a single, diverse and extremely vibrant visitor destination. Get ready to be charmed by the famous Geordie spirit in a city bursting with thriving nightlife, an award-winning restaurant scene, top-notch attractions and museums. The origins of Newcastle can be traced back to Roman times, and the city takes its name from the Norman Castle built by the son of William the Conqueror. Today, Newcastle is a lively and cosmopolitan city that manages to perfectly mix the very best of old and new. Your guided tour will share some of the city's best sights and stories that give Newcastle its unique appeal. A visit wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Quayside, home to two of the world's most famous bridges, and take in the striking sweep of The Sage Gateshead, the latest addition to the skyline. You also have free time to explore your favourite parts of this wonderful city at your own pace.

  • Plenty of free time in Newcastle
  • Excursion to Bamburgh Castle & Holy Island (tide permitting)

Holy Island of Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle

INCLUDED Visitor DestinationEnjoy a drive along the scenic heritage coastline and across the tidal causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home to Lindisfarne Castle and famed as the birthplace of English Christianity. Visit the iconic Tudor fort, converted in 1903 to an intimate holiday home by Sir Edwin Lutyens with the lovely garden created by Gertrude Jekyll in 1911. Take time to explore at your own pace in your serene surroundings that have been revered for almost 1,400 years since Saint Aidan travelled from Iona in 635AD and founded the monastery here.

Perched on rocks at the edge of the sea, Bamburgh Castle boasts magnificent views of the Farne Islands. Once home to the kings of ancient Northumbria, the Bamburgh Castle we see today is a relatively recent structure, built by famed industrialist the first Lord Armstrong at vast cost in late Victorian times. But the castle boasts a much longer history. There have been settlements on the site since prehistoric times and the regular archaeological digs that take place on the site have unearthed some spectacular finds. Bamburgh Castle has 14 public rooms and more than 2,000 artefacts, including arms and armour, porcelain, furniture and artwork. A true spectacle, not to be missed. Back to top
