Step into Christmas on our enchanting 4-day weekend coach holiday to experience the magical Christmas Markets in Valkenburg and Aachen, nestled in the heart of Europe's festive spirit.

Delight in the twinkling lights, the aroma of mulled wine, and the sound of carols as you wander through the charming stalls, and make unforgettable memories. If you love wonderful destinations, beautiful architecture and history in picture perfect settings then this is the ideal festive treat for you!

We stay on a B&B basis for 3 nights at the fabulous Mercure Liege City Centre, perfect for exploring the delights of Liege nestled in the heart of Belgium's Wallonia region on the picturesque Meuse River. It is also an excellent location for our three country tour as we hop over to neighbouring Germany to the historic cathedral city of Aachen, and also into Holland to the heart of pretty Valkenburg, which has long been an extremely popular sightseeing destination, beautifully located in the rolling hills of South Limburg, with its famous marlstone caves, castle ruins and lovely restaurants and cafés all set within a picture postcard setting.

During the Christmas season, the residents of Valkenburg transform the extraordinary caves under the city into spectacular Christmas Markets. Shop for Christmas decorations and gifts from more than 50 shops inside the Velvet and Municipal Caves*. Bright lights and Christmas trees with charming decorations illuminate the caves’ darkest corners.

You can also discover Aachen and its beautiful, brightly lit Christmas Market with stalls lining the squares and lanes around its fabulous UNESCO protected Aachen Cathedral and Town Hall. This lovingly decorated 'Christmas village' offers plenty of unique gifts and local delicacies to enjoy.

Itinerary

Day 1

Join your coach at your convenient local pick-up point, and get comfortable as we head to Kent to join our ferry at Dover for the crossing to France. We then continue to our hotel in central Liege for our three night stay.

Days 2 to 3

Enjoy breakfast every morning to set you for whatever each day has in store.

You can of course spend all of your time in Liege but we do include fabulous excursions over the border into Germany, visiting the wonderful town of Aachen, and into The Netherlands for time in Valkenburg.

Venture to the three countries ‘meeting point’, where Belgium, Holland and Germany come together. Continue just over the border into Germany to discover the charming town of Aachen. Enjoy free time exploring the great old town and its treasure filled cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Aachen’s delightful Christmas market is set around the cathedral and town hall. This lovingly decorated ‘Christmas village’ on the market square has something for everyone. One local speciality you really must try is the Aachen Printen, a kind of gingerbread

Enjoy a day exploring Valkenburg and the town’s magnificent Christmas Markets which are held in two caves deep under the city. We include entry into the Velvet Cave Christmas Market. Perhaps drink a hot chocolate whilst browsing the stalls and take in the magical location and atmosphere. It is unlike any Christmas Market you have ever seen! What’s more, in addition to the caves, there are the castle ruins, museums as well as a chair lift offering great views and a collection of shops, street cafés and restaurants.

Day 4

After breakfast, say farewell to Liege and sit back and relax as we head back towards Calais for the crossing back to the UK and the onward journey home to arrive back mid to late evening, between around 830 and 1130 pm subject to traffic and travel.

Valkenburg

Valkenburg is located in the South Limburg part of Holland, famous for its beautiful undulating scenery and pretty villages. As the oldest tourist centre in the Netherlands, Valkenburg itself boasts many attractions. It is famous for its historic caves with a network of over 150 miles of underground corridors beneath the town. A visit to these fascinating caves is highly recommended (opening varies seasonally). There is plenty to keep you occupied above ground as well, such as the striking Valkenburg Castle ruins, the only castle in the country built on a hill. There are also many shops, bars, cafés and restaurants.

Aachen

We then continue to Aachen, ancient capital of the Frankish Empire, where you enjoy some free time to explore and view the impressive sights of this historic city. Nestled in the heart of western Germany, Aachen is a city with a rich heritage that dates back over a thousand years. Highlights include the Town Hall, and the Elisenbrunnen fountain, which is also the symbol of the town, plus magnificent Aachen Cathedral, northern Europe's oldest cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can wander through the bustling streets of the Altstadt (Old Town), where you'll find charming cafes, boutique shops, and quaint squares. Be sure to indulge in some of the local delicacies, such as Aachener Printen, a type of gingerbread cookie, and explore the city's vibrant culinary scene.

Liege

Liege is a city with a story to tell, dating back to Roman times when it was a bustling trade hub. Its historical significance is evident in the stunning architecture that graces its streets, from medieval cathedrals to magnificent palaces. As you explore the city's winding alleys and grand squares, you'll be transported back in time, discovering the secrets of Liege's past.

One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the breathtaking Prince-Bishops' Palace, a true architectural masterpiece that showcases the grandeur of Liege's former rulers. Nearby, the striking St. Paul's Cathedral and St. Bartholomew's Church provide a glimpse into the city's religious heritage. Meanwhile, the Archeoforum offers an opportunity to delve even deeper into Liege's history, with its underground excavations revealing ancient Roman ruins. You can also discover the famous 374-step Montagne de Bueren staircase, La Boverie museum and the pretty Parc Boverie.
