Day 5

After breakfast we make our way home. After stopping for a coffee/lunch break, we continue homewards.

Port Isaac & Padstow

Made famous by the TV series Doc Martin, the name Port Isaac is derived from Port Izzyck, and is said to mean ‘corn port’. It has always been a prosperous fishing port, the main catch being pilchards. Boat building was also a thriving industry with two boat yards. During the twentieth century the pilchard shoals declined and Port Isaac’s way of life began to change. Its isolation became the attraction to an ‘upwardly mobile society’ and 70% of the old village has been bought by second home owners. It has also attracted the film and TV industry and become a major tourist stop in north Cornwall yet it remains a charming example of a north Cornish fishing village.

Padstow is a charming working fishing port surrounded by glorious sandy beaches, at the head of the Camel River. Watching the everyday ebb and flow of harbour life is a perfect way to spend a day. This foodie destination with popular eateries such as Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant, is the start and end point for the Camel Cycle Trail and a good base for water sports. For some of the cliff scenes in the TV series Poldark, the filming action moved to the Padstow area. Fans of north Cornwall will recognise Levlizzick, and the spectacular views across the Camel Estuary

Boscastle & Bude

Boscastle National Trust harbour nestles in a scenic rocky inlet on the dramatic north coast of Cornwall. To really appreciate the beauty of Boscastle, take a short walk in any one of four directions, all of which allow you a different perspective on this striking harbour and its coastline. You will have ample time to explore!

Bude has something for everyone - from romantic retreats for couples, action filled family holidays, or a haven for the nature or geology enthusiast. Bude has twice been voted the Best UK Coastal Resort, making it an excellent choice for a holiday. With activities and attractions accessible across both counties, why not sample a cream tea made both the Devon and Cornish way and decide which you prefer? The town is large enough to provide a good range of facilities with a choice of shops, restaurants and sports facilities, yet it is small enough to retain its Cornish charm. There are many beautiful sandy beaches to choose from along with spectacular views and unique natural attractions. The Bude sea pool for example is cut into the rock at Summerleaze Beach providing a more relaxed option for a dip.

Tintagel & Launceston

Set high on the rugged North Cornwall coast, Tintagel has dramatic sea views both from the castle ruins on the headland and island. This is a spectacular place, steeped in myths and mystery, and has inspired artists and writers throughout history who have associated it with the legend of King Arthur.

Walk around the narrow streets of Launceston and you get a real sense of the town’s ancient history. Up on the hill is a Norman castle and nearby prison. Overlooking the rolling countryside, you can see remains of the defensive wall that once circled the town, there’s a 14th century gatehouse into the old town and tucked away below the castle is a row of grand houses that Sir John Betjeman described as the loveliest Georgian street in Cornwall.
