D-Day Museum Portsmouth

The D-Day Story Museum in Portsmouth offers a powerful and deeply moving insight into one of the most significant events of the Second World War. Located just moments from the historic seafront, this award-winning museum tells the story of the Normandy landings with clarity, respect and real human emotion.

Through immersive exhibitions, original artefacts and personal accounts, visitors are taken back to 6 June 1944 and the events leading up to it. From the meticulous planning of Operation Overlord to the bravery of the servicemen, nurses and civilians involved, the museum brings history to life in a way that is both informative and thought-provoking. Letters, uniforms, photographs and oral histories help paint a vivid picture of the courage and sacrifice shown on that pivotal day.

One of the museum’s most striking features is the Overlord Embroidery – a remarkable 83-metre-long textile artwork that depicts the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in extraordinary detail. Created by hand, it offers a unique and poignant perspective on the campaign and is a highlight for many visitors.

The D-Day Story Museum is not just about military history; it’s about people, resilience and remembrance. Whether you have a long-standing interest in wartime history or are visiting for the first time, it provides an unforgettable and meaningful experience that encourages reflection and appreciation of the past.

Today, Winchester combines the best of city life with the freshness of the surrounding countryside. Home of good food and the country's largest farmers' market, birthplace of the modern game of cricket, resting place of author Jane Austen and inspiration to the many craft-makers and artists who live here, Winchester is truly a destination for all seasons. Popular for its bustling shopping streets, its floral summer season and quirky open air events, it is most well-known for its eleventh century Cathedral and for its Great Hall, which for over 700 years has housed the mysterious King Athur's Round Table. The many bars, traditional pubs and restaurants make eating out a pleasure, and there are pretty riverside walks past tranquil water meadows.
