The name Port Isaac is derived from Port Izzyck, and is said to mean ‘corn port’. It has always been a prosperous fishing port, the main catch being pilchards. Boat building was also a thriving industry with two boat yards. During the twentieth century the pilchard shoals declined and Port Isaac’s way of life began to change. Its isolation became the attraction to an ‘upwardly mobile society’ and 70% of the old village has been bought by second home owners. It has also attracted the film and TV industry and become a major tourist stop in north Cornwall yet it remains a charming example of a north Cornish fishing village.
Boscastle National Trust harbour nestles in a scenic rocky inlet on the dramatic north coast of Cornwall. To really appreciate the beauty of Boscastle, take a short walk in any one of four directions, all of which allow you a different perspective on this striking harbour and its coastline. You will have ample time to explore!
St Austell & Charlestown
The old market town of St Austell is just a few miles from the coast and is one of Cornwall's biggest towns and nowadays most famous for its beer and the St Austell Brewery. It is a pretty town with a good choice of local goods, food and drink available from a string of independent and national outlets. St Austell’s port is the lovely harbour of Charlestown, where you will frequently see old sailing ships. The port has been used as a film location for numerous films and television series, such as Poldark, and there is a small museum open during the season.
Narrow streets and steep valley sides lead down to the centre of the old Mevagissey where the distinctive twin harbour provides a safe haven for the many fishing boats that land their daily catch of skate, lobster, plaice and sole. In typical picture postcard style, pubs, cafes, galleries and shops cluster around the harbour walls and line the pretty streets. Named after two Irish saints, St Meva and St Issey, the village dates back to at least 1313.
