Dover Castle & Secret Wartime Tunnels
The most iconic of all English fortresses commanding the gateway to the realm for nine centuries. Climb the Great Tower, meet the characters and immerse yourself in vivid medieval interiors. Then delve deep within Dover’s White Cliffs to witness the drama in the Secret Wartime Tunnels. Roam through centuries of history at Dover Castle, from the Romans to the Cold War, in an action-packed day out. In May 1940 the greatest rescue of all time took place, masterminded right here deep within Dover’s secret wartime tunnels. See, hear and feel the danger as the events and people from the Dunkirk evacuation are made real. Journey through the tunnels deep beneath the castle as special effects, projections and real film footage bring this dramatic rescue operation to life. For those looking to explore the castle’s broader history, why not check out the Great Tower, a medieval palace like no other, the oldest lighthouse in the country which dates back to Roman times or the medieval wartime tunnels, built to resist siege nearly 800 years before the tunnels used for the Dunkirk rescue!
Chartwell House & Gardens
Chartwell was the much-loved Churchill family home from 1922 and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration until the end of his life and is now a National Trust property. The rooms remain much as they were when he lived here, with pictures, books and personal mementoes evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of a great statesman, writer, painter and family man. The hillside gardens reflect Sir Winston’s love of the landscape and nature. They include the lakes he created, the kitchen garden and the Marycot, a playhouse designed for his youngest daughter Mary. Beyond the gardens there is an expanse of woodland with looped trails and natural play areas. There’s den building, a Canadian camp and opportunities to stretch your legs.
