Thornton with Guided tour of the Old Bell Chapel & tea with cake at Emily's Cafe
Emily’s is a cafe in Thornton and the birthplace of the world’s most famous literary family, which we will be visiting for tea and cake. The café itself can be found in the original dining room of the Brontë family, as well as the birth room of Charlotte, Patrick Branwell, Emily and Anne Brontë. The café is in a Grade II listed building built in 1802 and the Brontë family lived there from 1815 to 19820. It has been renovated to its original timber staircase and with stone slab flooring, plus with the vintage décor, you can imagine how it may have looked. Emily’s is a community café, serving artisan coffee, loose leaf tea and fine food.
Guided Tour of The Old Bell Chapel
Another Brontë landmark in the village of Thornton is The Old Bell Chapel, where the Brontë sisters were baptised and where their father Patrick Brontë preached as a deacon. The Bell Chapel is open all year and on a guided tour you will learn about the history of the 400-year-old building, enjoy the tranquil surroundings and find out more about the life of the Brontë family during their early years living in Thornton before they moved to Haworth.
Haworth and Brontë Parsonage Museum
Haworth is famed for its connection to the Brontë sisters, who lived in the Parsonage from 1820 until their deaths. The Parsonage is now the Brontë Parsonage Museum and our excursion there will give you a chance to learn about the lives of the sisters growing up and their literary careers. The museum has many of its rooms reconstructed to look as would have when the Brontë family lived there, from the study to the kitchen, and there is also an extensive exhibition room. In the museum library, you will find the most comprehensive collection of manuscripts, letters, early editions, poetry and secondary material from the Brontë family.
After visiting the Brontë Parsonage Museum you can tour the village of Haworth and the surrounding moorland to see more locations linked to the sisters such as Brontë Bridge, Brontë Falls and Top Withens, which is said to be the inspiration for Wuthering Heights. Keep in mind that Haworth has some steep and cobbled streets, and the museum has steps to the entrance and is split over two floors.
