The sea breeze swishing through your hair, the sensation of wet sand between your toes and the smell of vinegary chips lingering in your nostrils: everyone has vivid memories of their childhood seaside holidays. Bumble about on creaky Victorian piers, crowned with roller coasters, have a chin-wag with a local artist in their seaside studio or lace up your hiking boots for a cliff-top stroll in search of puffins and gannets. Relish that nostalgic feeling again?

The traditional Victorian holiday resort of Eastbourne is one of our best-loved destinations. Eastbourne has a charm unrivalled on the south coast, with dazzling floral displays, magnificent Carpet Gardens, a delightful Victorian pier and a famous bandstand. The resort boasts a fantastic beach, with eight miles of coastline sheltered by the South Downs, itself designated ‘An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. The elegant seafront invites a leisurely stroll, and the resort, renowned as one of the finest ‘show towns’ of the south.

Excursions

Free time in Eastbourne

The traditional Victorian holiday resort of Eastbourne is one of our best-loved destinations.

Brighton & Lewes

Head along the coast road, through the towns of Seaford and Rottingdean, to the resort of Brighton. Also known as ‘Doctor Brighton’ and ‘London by the Sea’, the unique blend of outrageous architecture and quaint streets has made Brighton England’s most fashionable resort for over 200 years. Wander ‘The Lanes’, the oldest quarter, lined with 17th century fishermen’s cottages. We will also visit nearby Lewes, nestled in the beautiful South Downs.

British Airways i360

Take to the skies to see Brighton and the beautiful South Coast as you have never seen them before. Glide up gently to 138 metres on the world’s tallest moving observation tower, conceived and designed by Marks Barfield Architects, creators of the London Eye. In a futuristic glass viewing pod, visitors can admire 360-degree views across Brighton, the South Downs and, on the clearest days, all the way to the Isle of Wight.

Hastings and Rye

To the east of Eastbourne, we find Hastings, a seaside resort and fishing port. The tall, wooden huts used for drying the fishing nets still remain. It’s better known for the battle of Hastings in 1066. However, the most famous battle in England’s history actually took place 7 miles further north, where the small town of Battle lies. West of the old town is the beach, and beyond that you’ll find lots of Georgian and Victorian buildings. Hastings also boasts a lively arts scene. The medieval and walled town and port of Rye is a little further along the coast, with twisting cobbled streets and lanes and some great old buildings, many of them timber framed. St Mary’s church has one of the oldest functioning church turret clocks in the country. You can see it up close by climbing the tower which also offers splendid views of Rye Bay.
