Excursions

Tavistock & The Tamar Valley Railway

Tavistock
is the main town of Dartmoor's western moor. It is an exceptionally attractive town owing as much to some fine Victorian architecture as to its picturesque location on the banks of the river Tavy. It was the establishing of a Benedictine abbey on the banks of the River Tavy that put Tavistock on the map although it had to be rebuilt before it turned into the West Country’s most important Benedictine Abbey around the turn of the last millennium after it was destroyed by Vikings. Now a busy market town, there is no shortage of shops and cafes and it is also home to a purpose-built pannier market, possibly the best in the region.

Take a seat on the Tamar Valley Railway and enjoy watching the countryside roll by, with sleepy villages, river crossings, woodland and farms. The highlight of the journey is when the train slows down and crosses over the Calstock viaduct. You are 120 feet high, overlooking the river, with the National Trust Cotehele in the distance.

Torbay scenic drive (Babbacombe, Paignton, Brixham) & cream tea (half day)

Babbacombe is a magical spot on the English Riviera, with great beaches and attractions including Babbacombe Downs, the highest clifftop promenade in England. From the top you can enjoy views of the spectacular South Devon coastline. Also at Babbacombe is the Cliff Railway, taking passengers down to Oddicombe Bay.

The seaside resort of Paignton with its long stretch of beautiful and easily accessible beachfront, promenade, traditional pier and colourful beach huts offer one of the brightest jewels in the English Riviera’s crown.

Life in the busy Devon fishing town of Brixham has always centred around the harbour, where heritage trawlers jostle for space with dayboats heading out to sea for the day’s catch, bringing it home daily to Brixham’s famous Fish Market. Here, in the heart of England’s Seafood Coast, the freshest fish and most delicious seafood is on the menu everywhere. Brixham is the quintessential English harbour, with a colourful and vibrant feel all year round, making it as ideal for a summer holiday with the kids as it is for a romantic winter break for two.
