Excursions

Bourton-on-the-Water & Cirencester

Bourton-on-the-Water
straddles the River Windrush with its series of elegant low bridges beside neat tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks. Standing back from the river are traditional Cotswolds buildings, many of which are now tourist shops for the day-trippers and visitors. Nearby Stow is another iconic Cotswold destination, located high up on the Roman Fosse Way and offering fabulous views from its position as the highest of the Cotswolds towns.

Often referred to as the Capital of the Cotswolds, Cirencester was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times and in later years it was a very prosperous medieval wool town. Cirencester's market square is dominated by the cathedral-like Parish Church of St. John Baptist (one of the largest in England). The large south porch with its impressive fan vaulting was built about 1490. Cirencester's market town status was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The town has its own farmers' market whilst crafts and antiques markets are also regular attractions. Join us on a one hour walking tour to see the city’s highlights.

Lacock Abbey & Crop Circle Exhibition

Lacock Abbey is a country house with monastic roots. It was home to William Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of the photographic negative. The Abbey is at the heart of the village – which has been used as a filming location for several films and TV shows! - and surrounded by woodlands. The country house has several architectural designs from Medieval to Gothic Revival. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of the medieval rooms and cloister court.

Have you ever wanted to know more about crop circles and their mysterious origins? At the Crop Circle Exhibition & Information Centre in Wiltshire, is the perfect place to learn more. The multi-media exhibitions features loads of interesting facts and stunning photography so visitors can learn more.
