The Severn Valley Railway (one way journey) & Bridgnorth
Journey on the Severn Valley Railway, feeling the heat from the steam and rumbling as it moves along the tracks. Passing by breathtaking scenery, charming towns and villages, every journey on the railway is unforgettable. You’ll disembark at the northern end of the line, and have some time to explore Bridgnorth. The station there is largely original, dating to the opening of the line in 1862. The town itself is more or less two towns, Low Town and High Town with a funicular railway connecting the two. Low Town was once a thriving port on the River Severn while High Town is home to the castle, churches and 16th and 17th mansions.
Ludlow (morning) and Blists Hill Victorian Town (afternoon)
From its ancient castle to peaceful back streets, exploring the perfect historic town of Ludlow is a real pleasure, especially on market day. The lively feel combines with centuries of history, and the cafés, shops and fascinating architecture means a visit to Ludlow will not disappoint. The market has operated on the same site for over 900 years and continues to offer shoppers a fantastic choice of produces from all and artisan producers and sellers. You’ll find stalls selling fresh fruit and vegetables, game pies, preserves, wines and spirits as well as craft stalls selling handmade furniture, paintings and jewellery. As well as the bustling market, Ludlow is home to a varied range of independently owned shops, including family businesses where you can find gifts, antiques, clothes, books and more. You might also have time to explore Ludlow on your day out, visiting the castle, museums and church. Watch the world go by over 100 years ago.
Of all the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Blists Hill Victorian Town is perhaps the most popular. The open-air museum allows visitors to experience an atmospheric way of Victorian life in the late 1800’s. Life is re-enacted by townsfolk who wear the attire of the day and who go about their daily lives in the shops and workplaces of this authentic Victorian community. Many have been specially trained with specific skills and crafts and are ready to demonstrate to visitors, exactly how certain tasks would have been done in a small industrial town towards the end of Queen Victoria’s reign, in the 19th century. Popular attractions include steam-powered machinery, a Victorian chemist (the location for BBC2’s Victorian Pharmacy series), the squatters’ cottage, a schoolhouse and a bank, where you can swap your money for Victorian tokens to spend in the towns’ shops and pubs.
Shrewsbury guided tour, river cruise & afternoon tea at Percy Thrower's Garden Centre
Shrewsbury was founded by the Saxons and developed by the Tudors. Today the town has 660 listed buildings, Medieval streets and a mixture of one-off independent and high street shops. On your excursion to the town, you can join a guided tour to learn more about this interesting English town and a river cruise as the Severn loops around the town. Highlights of the town include the Darwin statue outside the library and Shrewsbury Abbey that dates to 1083.
