Plymouth combines the vibrancy of a modern city with the heritage of an historic port. Plymouth Hoe is always a big hit with visitors and certainly offers the best view in town from Smeaton’s Tower Lighthouse. In the Elizabethan Barbican are the Mayflower Steps, from where the Pilgrim Fathers famously set sail for America and the rest of the city is full of interesting and welcoming shops, bars and restaurants.
As part of the historic 400-year celebrations since the sailing of the Mayflower, the museum is commemorating it with events across the year so history buffs can learn more about the fascinating prowess of the British Navy. You’ll be staying at the lovely Copthorne Hotel, and will have time to explore Plymouth on included guided walk and cruise! On our way home we will also be stopping at the lovely Harbourside area in the centre of Bristol.

Copthorne Hotel Plymouth
Situated in the heart of the city is the Copthorne Hotel Plymouth. With the vibrant nightlife and cultural attractions in Devon right on its doorstep, and a short walk away from the Barbican and iconic Mayflower steps, it is hard to beat for location and convenience. The popular restaurant , best known for its Chef’s modern take on the local cuisine, draws in guests and locals alike and there is also a pleasant bar and fitness suite. All of the bedrooms are well-appointed, as you would expect.
After joining your coach at one of our pick-up point we head to South Devon. We aim to arrive in the afternoon, where there will be a guided walking tour along the Mayflower Trail and entrance to the Mayflower Museum.
After breakfast you will have free time to explore and shop in Plymouth at lesiure, but don’t miss our included cruise of Plymouth Harbour.
After breakfast on the last day, we head to Bristol Harbour before rejoining the coach and heading back home where we aim to arrive in the late afternoon.
Plymouth Guided Walking Tour - The Mayflower Trail + Mayflower Museum
In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower to America, join us on a walking tour of Plymouth, following the Mayflower Trail where guides will share expert information about the preparation and voyage. You’ll be following in the footsteps of many Pilgrims and Sir Francis Drake and will walk past the 15th and 16th century buildings from the time. Following the tour, enjoy entry to the Mayflower Museum where you can learn more.
Plymouth Harbour Cruise, The Barbican & Free Time
An exciting new cruise for 2021 helps bring to life the Mayflower story. On the Plymouth Harbour Cruise, you’ll depart from the same spot where Pilgrims left for America in 1620, before sailing around the Plymouth Sound, flanked by the beautiful Devon and Cornish coasts. Commentary is provided detailing the historic 60-day voyage over the Atlantic. The tour then continues down the River Tamar, where you’ll enjoy views of Plymouth hoe and Drakes Island. There will also be free time to do shopping in the Barbican district, full of high street and quirky independent stores.
Some say that Bristol is a city that doesn’t just buzz, it thumps! The harbourside district is a vibrant hotbed of restaurants, bars and cafes whilst the river and its numerous water taxis and buses makes this a fascinating city to travel around. Bristol’s maritime history is on display all along the waterfront culminating in the magnificent SS Great Britain.
