Ilfracombe & Lynton Cliff Railway
This seaside town is home to renowned artist Damien Hirst’s famous 20m high sculpture, Verity, and a collection of local galleries featuring a mix of local and international artists. For creative entertainment, check out the programme at Ilfracombe’s Landmark Theatre, ranging from vintage festivals to internationally acclaimed music, drama and comedies. Ilfracombe’s reputation as the culinary and cultural centre of North Devon has been steadily growing for the past few years, with people now calling it the new St. Ives. This picturesque harbour town is also steeped in maritime history and remains one of the key working fishing ports in North Devon, reflected in the local menus. Try the restaurants on ‘foodie’ Fore Street and around the harbour with menus featuring seasonal, local produce.
Lynton Travelling through Exmoor we visit Lynton and Lynmouth, both lying on the northern edge of the West Country Peninsula in an area of incomparable beauty. Set amongst the spectacular scenery of an area known as England’s Little Switzerland is Lynton, a small Victorian town with a selection of shops, tea-rooms and cafés. Lynmouth is a pretty harbour nestling beneath the cliffs. It is a quiet retreat where you can wander between the quaint fishing cottages that line the narrow street down towards the quay and the distinctive Rhenish Tower. The cliff funicular between the two villages is extra and payable locally.
Clovelly with guided tour & Dartington Crystal
Clovelly is a world famous and working fishing village with a history dating back almost 1000 years. The small and unique village has a sloping cobbled path down to the harbour and beach, so steep that residents use sleds and donkeys to pull their shopping up and down! There is a longer route available to take by car to the harbour, famous for being used as a filming location due to its unchanged appearance for over a hundred years. On a guided tour of the village, you can learn about the villages history and traditions.
The story of Dartington Crystal, its designs and landmark events are features in a series of fascinating exhibitions featuring products and images from over 50 years, housed at its custom-built Visitor Centre. Marvel at the continuous flow of a special fountain tower made with Dartington Crystal champagne saucers and if you're lucky you might get to watch the Master Engraver Nick Davey demonstrate his talent as he free-hand engraves detailed images onto prestige pieces to create crystal works of art. Having learnt a little of its glass making story in the Visitor Centre you can enter the factory to see “up-close” how molten glass is transformed into items of beauty and function. The viewing areas and overhead walkways let you safely watch the skilled glass making both at ground level and from above. All the processes are explained with information boards and displays allowing you to pass through the factory at your own pace.
