  • Day 2 - The British Airborne Story on D-Day

We depart Rouen and travel into Normandy to look at the landings by 6th (Airborne) Division which began in the early hours of 6th June 1944. We start with the Merville Battery, which the 9th Parachute Battalion attacked on D-Day, seeing the museum and bunkers.

We then travel across the Drop and Landing Zones to Pegasus Bridge, where the landings began. Here we take time for lunch, and then look at the Pegasus Bridge story and visit the Museum which includes the original bridge that was here in 1944. We then visit the Airborne graves at Ranville and go up on the Breville Ridge looking at the vital battles for this ‘Eastern Flank’. We continue to our hotel in Saint Lô or Caen for four nights.

    Meals - Breakfast

  • Day 3 - Rangers Lead The Way – Bloody Omaha

This morning we begin at Pointe du Hoc, the site of a German gun battery attacked by the US Rangers on D-Day who scaled a sheer cliff to reach it. We visit the site, the Visitors Centre, and the bunkers and memorial. Please note there is some walking involved here.

We then continue to Omaha Beach and look at the landings between the Vierville and Les Moulins draws where the 29th Division came ashore as depicted in ‘Saving Private Ryan’. After lunchtime at Port en-Bessin, where the Pipe Line Under The Ocean (PLUTO) came in, we return to Omaha Beach, visiting the Normandy American Cemetery, the bunkers at WN62, and the superb Overlord Museum with one of the best collections in Normandy.

We then visit the Longues Battery, a German gun battery site that was later used in the filming for ‘The Longest Day’: here the guns are still in their bunkers!
