Itinerary

2018 Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Regional departure by coach or Door-to-Door service, then to Portsmouth/Plymouth for the overnight crossing to Santander. Accommodation is in inside cabins with en suite facilities. The crossing takes 24 hours during which you can enjoy the facilities on board.

    Please note: When you board the ferry at Portsmouth or Plymouth, you will require a small overnight bag containing any essential items such as medication. Please note that this small bag (no larger than a small rucksack) is counted as part of your overall luggage allowance.

  • Day 2

    We arrive at the port of Santander and travel by coach to our hotel in the Palencia area for one night.

  • Day 3 - Leon

    We follow some of the Pilgrims’ route of the ‘Way of St. James’ en route to the historic city of Leon with its 13th Century Gothic cathedral and the Gaudi-designed Casa Botines Palace. We stay overnight.

  • Day 4

    We continue into Galicia for a two-night stay on the outskirts of Santiago de Compostela. During the day, there will be the opportunity to walk some of the famous pilgrimage route.

  • Day 5 - Santiago de Compostela

    Join our included excursion today to the famous pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela with a guide, visiting the Old Quarter and the cathedral. This Galician town is famous for being the end of the network of pilgrimage routes known as the 'Way of St James' or 'Camino de Santiago'. Many pilgrims come here to visit the tomb of St James the Apostle, which is located within the cathedral.

  • Day 6 - Porto

    We cross into Portugal and head to Porto, a wonderful, walled city on the banks of the Douro River and origin of the famous fortified wine. An optional guided tour will show you many sights linked to Porto’s history including the scenic historical quarter and cathedral. We end our tour at a traditional port cellar before continuing to to the popular resort of Figueira da Foz, where we stay for four nights. Figueira has long been a favourite with UK holidaymakers, thanks largely to its extensive white sandy beaches, cosmopolitan atmosphere and mix of traditional and modern architecture.

  • Day 7 - Coimbra

    Included excursion to the pretty riverfront city of Coimbra. This former medieval capital of Portugal is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities and today its historic centre of multi-coloured houses combines with a lively, vibrant atmosphere; a delight we’re sure you will enjoy.

  • Day 8 - Free Time

    A relaxing day at leisure on the Portuguese coast.

  • Day 9 - Free Time or Fatima & Obidos

    Optional excursion which takes us firstly to the Pilgrimage town of Fatima. The town is regarded as one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Explore the beautiful architecture of the town and see the most famous sights – the Batalha Church and Monastery. Fatima's Sanctuary welcomes thousands of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world. We continue to the pretty, walled town of Obidos. See the winemaking techniques, along with a tour of the vineyard followed by a tasting of the local produce.

  • Day 10

    Leave Portugal and travel to the Burgos area for an overnight stay.

  • Day 11 - San Sebastián

    Spend some time in Burgos. The city's cathedral is a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture. Explore the historic old quarter on the north bank of Rio Arlanzon. Later we head to the beautiful Spanish resort town of San Sebastián, picturesquely situated on a shell-shaped bay. We continue into France and stay overnight in the Biarritz/Ciboure area.

    Travel north to the Paris area for an overnight stay.

Accommodation

You will stay for one night in the 4-star Europa Centro Palencia in the Palencia area, followed by one night at the 4-star Hotel Conde Luna, then two nights at the 4-star Eurostars San Lazaro, in the Santiago de Compostela area. Four nights are spent at the 4-star Eurostars Oasis Plaza, and then one night at the Puerta de Burgos, in the Burgos area.

Overnight stays in France will be in city-style hotels.

On the overnight ferry sailing, accommodation will be in en suite cabins. Meals are not included on board ship.
