New Year's Eve - Free Time or Basel
Our optional excursion takes us over the border into Switzerland and to the city of Basel. Located in the heart of Europe, on the banks of the Rhine, the city is the centre of the idyllic border triangle of France, Germany and Switzerland. The river is the true lifeblood of the city and is one of the most important trading routes. It has had a huge influence on the development of the city by moulding the history and architecture. Today it provides recreation and in the summer months Basel’s inhabitants, students and businessmen flock to the riverbank to sunbathe! Basel is a cultural city for lovers of fine wine and dining. Its unique location on the border of three neighbouring countries has a profound influence on its cuisine. There are more than 20 restaurants here with entries in the Michelin Guide as well as a wide variety of different foods on offer. The variety is also evident when it comes to shopping, with luxurious labels such as Hermès or Louis Vuitton and shops selling fine shoes, fashion items, books or other specialities. From small boutiques to large department stores - in Basel you will find everything. The best way to discover Basel city centre is on one of the individual colour coded walking routes (available to download on a mobile app) offered by Basel Tourismus. Be your own guide and choose one of the five routes around the city following the respective signposts and route colour. Each route starts and ends in Marketplatz and guides you through the streets of the Old Town to the most important museums and prettiest piazzas. All routes show you the city and its development from a slightly different perspective. Thanks to the compact size of the city, it is ideal to discover its charms by foot and there will be ample free time to explore at your leisure.

Jan 2 - Free Time or Freiburg
The Black Forest is one of the most visited and best-known holiday regions of Germany. People are attracted by the outstanding natural beauty of its varied landscapes; from deep forests, rolling hills, lush meadows and pretty villages with decorated wooden houses. On our optional excursion we visit the university city of Freiburg im Breisgau, one of the most attractive of South Germany and generally regarded as being the “unofficial capital” of the Black Forest. The charming old town is dominated by its Gothic Munster the towering spire of which is the landmark of the city. The town centre is noted for its pretty squares and romantic lanes and alongside some of the cobbled streets run a series of narrow streams called the Bachle. Perhaps take a stroll through the historic old town to learn about the culture and history of the city, or spend time in one of the cosy cafés. A visit to the cathedral is a must. Completed in 1330, the tower stands at an impressive 116 meters in height. There will be ample free time for you to explore the city at your own pace.
