Itinerary

  • DAY 1 Paignton
  • Make your own way to the Redcliffe Hotel in Paignton, where your Tour Manager will meet you in reception and assist with check in. Located on the English Riviera, midway between Torquay and Brixham, Paignton is the perfect base for this holiday. It boasts a picturesque harbour, award-winning sandy beaches and an iconic Victorian pier. Perhaps head out for a stroll this afternoon before getting to know the group over a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel this evening.
  • DAY 2 Kingswear to Paignton
  • Walk 16.1km/10 miles – 6 hours. This morning we'll travel by coach to Kingswear on the banks of the River Dart. On our 10-mile walk we'll follow the course of the river and then join a section of the John Musgrave Heritage Trail. This walking trail was created in memory of the former chairman of the South Devon Group of Ramblers, and explores some of the best countryside in the area. At Elberry Cove we'll join the coastal path and make our way along a delightful cliff-top meadow. There are plenty of benches, so you can take the weight off your feet and admire far-reaching views out to sea. After lunch we'll walk to the beautiful bay of Broadsands and then follow the coastal path back to Paignton.
Enjoy some time at leisure this afternoon to enjoy the superb facilities at your hotel. You could relax in the bar with a drink or maybe take a dip in the indoor swimming pool.
  • DAY 3 River Otter to Budleigh Salterton
  • Walk 8.9km/5.5 miles – 3 hours. We'll travel to the village of Newton Poppleford to begin our walk this morning. Look out for kingfishers and other birds as you follow the River Otter. The river was named in Anglo-Saxon times, but in the post-war period the otters once found here disappeared. They have recently returned, but sightings of these shy creatures are rare. We'll head into the village of Otterton and see the working Otterton Mill. From here our walk along the river continues through the Otter Estuary Nature Reserve and on to Budleigh Salterton, a pretty town with a long pebble beach and an array of charming independent shops. There will be time for a browse around the town before we return to the hotel.
  • DAY 4 Dartmoor
  • Walk 14.5km/9 miles – 6 hours. Nestling amid Devon's rolling hills, Widecombe-in-the-Moor lies in a valley created by the East Webburn river. This beautiful village is the start point for today's walk. As we head out of Widecombe, the path leads us high up on to the moor and then joins a section of the Two Moors Way to Hambledon Tor. From here we'll pass Jay's Grave, which according to legend is the final resting place of Kitty Jay, an 18th century workhouse orphan who hanged herself after being deserted by her lover. We'll continue on to Hound Tor, where the remains of a smattering of 13th century longhouses can be seen, and then cut between the rocky outcrops of Bell Tor and Bonehill Tor before descending back into the village of Widecombe. Enjoy some free time to explore the village before returning to the hotel.
  • DAY 5 Depart Paignton
  • After breakfast this morning it's time to say farewell and make your own way home.
