Not Included

  • DAY 1 UK to Foligno
  • You'll fly to Rome today and drive to Foligno, located in the heart of Umbria, for a 3 night stay. Your hotel is in the central pedestrian zone of the town. Take the opportunity to get to know your travelling companions over a welcome drink and dinner at the hotel this evening.
  • DAY 2 Assisi
  • We'll visit Assisi today, said to be the jewel of Umbria. Beneath the slopes of Mount Subasio we'll discover streets of muted pink stone buildings crowned by the famous Basilica of St Francis. This ambitious construction, actually two churches built on top of each other, is a celebration of 13th and 14th century art and decorated with renowned frescoes. We'll have free time to explore the city; a wander to the Piazza del Comune is highly recommended.

Alternatively take a stroll amongst the narrow steep alleys and tiny shady squares and enjoy a bite to eat in one of the cafes. This evening join our optional tour to Spoleto, a delightful hill town. A walk will ensure we see all the highlights and the tour concludes with a dinner in a local restaurant.

  • DAY 3 Deruta & Marmore Waterfall
  • The day is free for you to explore the historic centre of Foligno and perhaps visit one of the excellent chocolate shops. Alternatively, join our optional tour and discover more of the area. We'll visit the medieval town of Deruta, famous worldwide for its colourful ceramics. Learn how this artistic tradition dates back to the Etruscan period during a demonstration. Later, we'll visit Cascata delle Marmore, a majestic artificial waterfall built by the Romans. We'll visit the falls when they are in full flow, following an easy trail near the cascading water.
  • DAY 4 Gubbio & La Verna
  • This morning we'll visit Gubbio, set on the slopes of Monte Ingino and dating back to the Roman period. The town is distinguished by its medieval palaces. It is here where St Francis of Assisi is said to have tamed a wolf, creating a lasting peace between the animal and the townspeople.

This afternoon we'll visit the sanctuary of La Verna, located in the Tuscan Apennines. In the summer of 1224 St Francis withdrew to this monastery and it is here that he received the stigmata, a term used by members of the Christian faith to describe body marks or sensations that correspond to the crucifixion wounds of Jesus Christ. Today the monks produce herbal remedies and liquors at the monastery. We'll continue to our hotel on the shores of Lake Trasimeno, our base for the next 4 nights. Dinner is included at the hotel this evening.

  • DAY 5 Bread-making lesson
  • We'll visit an organic farm this morning and discover how typical grains have evolved over the centuries. Rare types of vegetables are also grown here. A traditional bread making lesson will follow before we sit down to a delicious lunch of organic produce. Afternoon at leisure.
  • DAY 6 Perugia & Birdwatching
  • You are free to relax on the shores of Lake Trasimeno today.

Alternatively, join our optional tour to Perugia, the capital town of Umbria. With our local guide we'll discover some of the highlights of the town including the Cathedral, the wonderful Piazza IV November and its famous fountain. We'll then have some free time for lunch.

In the afternoon we'll visit the Naturalistic Oasis La Valle, a stopping point for many migratory birds en route from Northern Europe to Africa. Here we'll learn first-hand how birds are monitored and ringed and how their migratory habits are shared around the world.

This evening join our optional tour to a local farmhouse renowned for its heritage pulses. We'll take a tractor and trailer ride and enjoy lovely views of the lake before a traditional dinner of local produce.

  • DAY 7 La Scarzuola & Lake Trasimeno
  •  Today we'll visit the convent of La Scarzuola where a church is dedicated to St Francis. In the 1950's an avant-garde architect built his ideal city around the convent. A mix of architectural styles were used to create quite extraordinary buildings and a unique environment, all of which we'll experience during our tour.

Later we'll take the ferry to Isola Maggiore, a peaceful spot with just 18 residents. There will be time to enjoy lunch and visit the quaint lace museums. You may get the chance to engage with the local women who still produce lace and often sit sewing outside their homes.

This evening join your travelling companions for a farewell dinner at the hotel, the perfect end to your holiday.

  • DAY 8 Lake Trasimeno to UK
  • We'll transfer to Rome Airport for the return flight to the UK.
