Maybe you'll step ashore to take in some of the sights, including the Ringstrasse – a smart boulevard lined with fine buildings including the State Opera, the Hofburg Palace and the Burgtheatre. Back on board, enjoy dinner in the restaurant followed by a musical evening in the ship's lounge.
  • DAY 2 Bratislava
  • Our journey on the River Danube takes us over the border into Slovakia today, and an optional tour of its capital, Bratislava, is highly recommended. A stroll with a Local Guide will introduce you to many grand historic buildings which form an interesting contrast to the more modern parts of the city. In the Old Town we'll see St Michael's Gate and Tower, the only one of four entrances to the medieval city that survives today. Other highlights are St Martin's Cathedral, the Old Town Hall, the ancient city walls and a host of impressive sculptures and ornate fountains.
On board the ship this evening, we'll gather together for a welcome cocktail and dinner with the captain and crew.
  • DAY 3 Dürnstein & Melk
  • Today we cruise back into Austria, where our discoveries begin with a drive through the Austrian Wachau to Dürnstein. On this optional shore excursion you'll take in spectacular scenery as you journey through this vine-clad valley dotted with medieval castles, traditional villages and ancient churches. Towering above the town are the ruins of a fortified castle, where legend says Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner by Duke Leopold IV during the Third Crusade. During free time, take a stroll through streets boasting well-preserved medieval buildings and admire the Baroque abbey, with its blue and white tower. If there's time, why not sample a glass of Austrian wine or apricot liqueur, which is a local speciality, before we head back to the ship.
We offer another optional excursion today, this time we'll head to Melk. The town has been a spiritual centre for more than 1,000 years, since Margrave Leopold I made Melk castle his residence in the 10th century. In the 11th century, the castle was given to Benedictine monks who transformed it into a fortified abbey, and this is our destination this afternoon. Highlights are its museum, the library, which boasts 16,000 volumes, and the Marble Hall, which has an exquisitely painted ceiling.
  • DAY 4 Passau
  • We arrive in the Eastern Bavarian city of Passau today, where three rivers – the Danube, Inn and Ilz – meet. An optional tour takes in the Old Town with the 14th century Cathedral of St Steven at its heart, which houses the world's largest church organ. As we stroll we'll take in the Baroque-style architecture which lines its winding lanes, squares and promenades. Cast your gaze upwards too for views of the Veste Oberhaus fortress and the Mariahilf Monastery, which loom overhead.
  • DAY 5 Regensburg
  • If you choose to join an optional walking tour of Regensburg today you'll discover a wonderfully preserved medieval city with a great number of churches and monasteries, as well as a 12th century bridge spanning the River Danube. Its historical centre boasts nearly 1,000 listed buildings, with Regensburg Cathedral, the Collegiate Church of St John, the Cathedral Treasury Museum and the Adler Pharmacy among its most significant architectural sites.

In the 1930s the city, which was known as the 'most German of German cities', . After the Second World War, during which it was severely damaged, it would also become the destination for the famous war trials. It was then that much of the city was redeveloped, in many instances using the original stone to bring back to life the main historical buildings, including the castle and churches in the Old Town.
