Itinerary

  • DAY 1 UK to San Marino
  • You'll fly to Bologna today, transferring on arrival to San Marino, your base for the next four nights. Close to the Apennines and just a few kilometres inland from Rimini, this tiny nation boasts grand fortresses and stunning views of the Adriatic from its hilltop location. This afternoon enjoy a walking tour in the company of a Local Guide. You'll see the Government Palace and pay a visit to the San Marino Basilica, the heart of both the city and the republic. Get to know your travelling companions over an included welcome dinner in a restaurant this evening.
  • DAY 2 San Marino
  • You are free to explore San Marino at your own pace today. Perhaps visit one of the many museums or take a panoramic stroll to the hilltop Cesta fortress. Enjoy views from the Piazza della Liberta or wander round the elaborate carvings of the Palazzo Pubblico. Alternatively, just relax in a café and soak up the atmosphere of this enchanting capital.
  • DAY 3 Pesaro & Urbino
  • We'll travel into the Italian region of Le Marche today on an included excursion. Our first stop is Pesaro, a pretty town on the Adriatic coast and the birthplace of Rossini. The composer was so fond of Pesaro that he left the town all of his possessions, which are now housed in Casa Rossini, a museum celebrating his life. Later we'll visit the hill town of Urbino, an enchanting jumble of medieval and renaissance houses, churches and palazzos. The splendid 15th century Palazzo Ducale was built by some of the finest craftsmen of the time and towers above the rooftops. We'll join a Local Guide for a tour of this architectural masterpiece.
  • DAY 4 Ravenna & San Leo
  • Enjoy a leisurely day in San Marino. Alternatively, join an optional excursion to the Italian region of Romagna. A guided tour will introduce the historical centre of Ravenna. Highlights include the Basilica di San Vitale and the Basilica di Sant'Appollinare Nuovo. We'll also view the 5th and 6th century mosaics at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia – they are some of the finest in the world. Later we continue to San Leo, a delightful hilltop town with houses clustered between a magnificent medieval fortress and a striking bell tower. This evening you can choose to enjoy an optional farewell dinner in a local restaurant.
  • DAY 5 Bologna to UK
  • We'll leave San Marino this morning for the drive into Emilia Romagna and the Italian city of Bologna. Known as 'la grassa', which literally translates as 'the fat one', Bologna has earned its nickname thanks to the bounty of wonderful food that is produced in the area. The historic centre is dominated by a market and the surrounding narrow streets are lined with historic food shops, bursting with gourmet delights. Enjoy an included tour of the city before transferring to Bologna airport for the return flight back to the UK.
