Itinerary

  • Day 1 UK to Lille
  • Meet your Tour Manager at London St Pancras International for your journey to Lille by Eurostar. After transferring to your hotel get to know your travelling companions over a welcome dinner this evening.
  • Day 2 Poperinge, Ypres Salient & Tyne Cot Cemetery
  • Located in the small town of Poperinge we'll discover Talbot House, or TOC H as it was known in army signallers' code – a club where British soldiers could meet and relax regardless of rank. We'll then head to the infamous Ypres Salient and Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world, and the resting place of 11,954 soldiers. There will be time to take lunch with your travelling companions before our afternoon visit to Ypres, which was devastated during some of the worst fighting of the First World War, but is now beautifully restored.
In the evening you will have the opportunity to pay your respects at the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.
  • Day 3 The Somme and Vimy Ridge
  • The Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park sits on the site of the Somme battlefield and it's a poignant place to start our explorations. Named after the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the park is a memorial to all the Newfoundlanders who fought in the First World War and the many other soldiers from other regiments who fought and died on this spot. A guided tour will recount the disastrous attack of 1st July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
We'll visit the Thiepval Anglo-French Memorial, which bears the names of some 73,000 British and South African soldiers missing or who fell at the Somme, before heading to the Vimy Ridge, a vital part of the German defence system which was captured by the Canadians in April 1917.
Return to your hotel where we'll gather for a farewell drink.
  • Day 4 Lille to UK
  • This morning there will be an included stop at the In Flanders Field Museum which presents the story of the First World War in the West Flanders front region. After your visit, transfer to the station for your return journey back to the UK.
