Itinerary

Description

The beautiful Yorkshire countryside provides the perfect backdrop for the county’s elegant houses, atmospheric ruins and delightful gardens. We explore some of the highlights of this charmingly rugged region, from the magnificent Treasure House of Harewood and the monastic ruins of Fountains Abbey to the ancient city of York with its iconic York Minster and the innovative RHS Garden Harlow Carr.

Itinerary

Excursion One – Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden & Ripley Castle
We start the day at the largest monastic ruins in Britain, Fountains Abbey, now recognised as a World Heritage Site. Our guided tour takes us on a journey through 800 years of history, bringing this remarkable place to life. These ancient, atmospheric ruins are nestled in the Skell Valley, surrounded by some 800 acres of gorgeous countryside, including the Georgian Studley Royal Water Garden with its wonderful views, cascades, follies and statues, and a medieval deer park, where we have free time to explore after our tour.

Our next visit takes us to Ripley Castle. Home to the Ingilby family for over 700 years, the castle is steeped in history and offers fascinating stories of its inhabitants; one of the ten oldest families in the country still living in the same residence. Ripley’s colourful and sometimes gruesome history is well documented – one of political, military, religious and social turbulence, of plague and persecution, of renaissance, enlightenment and industrial revolution, and we learn more on our guided tour.

Excursion Two – RHS Garden Harlow Carr & Harewood House
The morning is spent at RHS Garden Harlow Carr. Set in a valley, this innovative garden has a wide variety of growing landscapes ranging from woodland to wildflower meadows that all blend into the Yorkshire countryside. The main highlights include the alpine zone, the colourful main borders (one of the original features of Harlow Carr, offering a wealth of inspiring plant combinations), and the streamside and scented gardens.

From here, we make our way to Harewood House where we enjoy a guided tour. Built in the 18th century for Edwin Lascelles to designs by architect John Carr, it is one of the greatest Treasure Houses in England with interiors designed by Robert Adam, superb Thomas Chippendale furniture and an outstanding art collection ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to 20th-century art. Set in a magnificent landscape created by ‘Capability’ Brown, Harewood is still home to the Lascelles family with the 7th Earl, cousin to the Queen, and Countess living here, and reflects the changing tastes and styles of the past 250 years.

Excursion Three – York, River Ouse Cruise & York Minster
We head to York where we start with a boat cruise along the beautiful River Ouse, the perfect opportunity to see the city from a different perspective and learn fascinating facts about the incredible history of York and its river from the live commentary. Light refreshments are available to purchase on board.

Next we enjoy a guided tour of York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe and home to some of the most stunning stained glass windows that have led to the Minster being described as ‘the Sistine Chapel of England’.

Afterwards, there’s some free time to explore the city at leisure. York is steeped in history, from its founding by the Romans in 71AD to its wealth as a medieval wool trading centre and there is plenty of evidence of this fascinating past left to admire, from the Roman city walls to the surviving medieval streets known as the Shambles.
