Itinerary

Description

2019 sees the glorious cathedral city of Gloucester play host to the Three Choirs Festival, a programme of choral and orchestral concerts, cathedral services, solo and chamber music recitals. It is the oldest non-competitive classical music festival in the world, having celebrated its 300th anniversary back in 2015. A hand-picked selection of concerts will offer an entertaining and stimulating addition to your weekend itinerary which includes visits to some impressive locations such as the spectacular Newark Park.

Coach Itinerary

Friday – Arrival

Check-in at the hotel on this weekend break is from 3pm. After meeting our Tour Manager, we enjoy a welcome drink and dinner together at the hotel.

Saturday – Newark Park, Painswick Rococo Garden & Evening Concert

Newark Park is set in a spectacular estate with breathtaking views over the Cotswold landscape. The house is steeped in history, from its founding by an influential English courtier to Henry VIII in 1550 to its dramatic rescue by a Texan architect in the 20th century. The atmospheric interiors are home to an eclectic collection of period furniture, modern art and other artefacts from across the globe.

Rococo describes a period of intensely decorative art that was fashionable in the 1700s in Europe and our next stop today is the Painswick Rococo Garden. Initially designed in the 1740s as an English country gentleman’s venue for hosting intimate garden parties, this is now the only complete Rococo garden in England filled with fanciful follies and bursting with imaginative planting.

This evening we enjoy our first concert in Gloucester – time to sit back and savour some fine choral music.

Sunday – Berkeley Castle, Dr Jenner’s House & Evening Concert

Today we begin at Berkeley Castle, still home to the Berkeley family. Construction began in the early part of the 12th century. It is best known as the scene of the brutal murder of Edward ll in 1327. The castle has also been used for filming including for popular TV drama Poldark. The state apartments showcase beautiful collections of furniture and rare paintings.

Next we head to Dr Jenner’s House – our chance to discover the home of the country doctor whose work changed the world. This is the house where Edward Jenner, pioneer of the smallpox vaccination, once lived and from here he told the world about his work.

In the evening, we head back into Gloucester for an inspiring choral concert, a fitting finale to our weekend.

Monday – Departure

After breakfast, we check out of the hotel for the journey home.
