Itinerary

Description

We explore the best of the West Country on this delightful five-day break. Take a nostalgic journey into yesteryear as we combine the coastal charms of Minehead with the heritage of the West Somerset Railway, along with the beauty of Regency Bath. There is even the chance to discover photogenic Shaftesbury and the ancient market town of Warminster on our special optional excursion.

Itinerary

Included Excursions

West Somerset Railway & Minehead (full day)

We board the West Somerset Railway for a nostalgic journey stretching 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead. Travelling through the gently rolling Quantock Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we pass unspoilt villages and farms nestling in leafy lanes before following the cliffs and coast between Exmoor and the Bristol Channel with distant views of South Wales. We disembark in the traditional resort of Minehead with its promenade, long sandy beach and harbour, where we have some time to explore at leisure.

Bath (full day)

We enjoy some free time in the beautiful city of Bath. The city has remained faithful to its Regency roots, with an abundance of elegant terraces, circuses and squares in a picturesque valley setting. The magnificent Royal Crescent is a must-see and the central square is home not only to Bath Abbey, but also the ancient Roman Baths. The city has an excellent selection of shops; especially along the Pulteney Bridge, one of only four bridges in the world to feature shops across its full span on both sides.

Optional Excursion

Shaftesbury & Warminster - £11pp (full day)

Join our optional excursion where we first visit Shaftesbury. Cameras at the ready for Gold Hill! Made famous by the 1970s Hovis advert, this beautiful, cobbled street certainly rises to the occasion when it comes to delivering magical views and a whole heap of nostalgia. Take the chance to wander past the pretty chocolate-box cottages and marvel at Shaftesbury Abbey’s Grade I listed walls.

Afterwards, we head to the quaint town of Warminster, nestled against the River Were. There is plenty to see and do in this leafy market town, why not soak up the charms of the historical buildings and have a browse around the eclectic mix of shops? The Warminster Maltings is also worth a visit, being the oldest working Maltings in Britain!
