Itinerary

Description

The Welsh Marches, a region which stretches along the border counties of England and Wales, is characterised by beautiful unspoilt countryside dotted with picturesque market towns and sleepy villages. We combine visits to some of these attractive towns with a scenic cruise on the River Severn and a trip on one of Britain’s best-loved heritage railways as it meanders through this picture postcard landscape.

Itinerary

Severn Valley Railway, Shrewsbury & River Severn Cruise (full day)
We take a step back in time on the Severn Valley Railway for a wonderful heritage train journey from Kidderminster to the ancient riverside town of Bridgnorth. The train meanders its way along the picturesque Severn Valley, passing quaint towns and villages along the way.

Afterwards, we continue on to Shrewsbury, a fine medieval market town packed with timber-framed black and white buildings, a maze of narrow alleys and cobbled streets. Here we board our boat for a scenic cruise along the River Severn as it loops around the town. We enjoy light refreshments while we take in the beautiful views and discover the town’s unique history from our captain’s commentary.

Ludlow, Llandrindod Wells & Hay-on-Wye (full day)
Our first stop is the thriving medieval town of Ludlow, which boasts a magnificent ruined castle as its centrepiece. Described by Sir John Betjeman as ‘probably the loveliest town in England’, the streets are lined with medieval and Tudor style half-timbered and Georgian buildings.

Next, we cross the border into Wales and pay a visit to the market town of Llandrindod Wells which evolved into a fashionable spa resort in the Victorian era, thanks to the discovery of its springs. This picturesque town boasts arts and crafts shops, gift boutiques and beautiful outdoor spaces including Rock Park and Temple Gardens.

Finally, we visit the pretty town of Hay-on-Wye which lies on the Anglo-Welsh border. Often described as "the town of books", it is home to numerous independent bookshops selling second hand, antiquarian and rare books as well as antique and craft shops.

Hereford & Worcester (full day)
We spend the morning in Hereford, with its quaint cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings, set along the banks of the River Wye. The 12th-century cathedral is home to the famed 13th-century Mappa Mundi – the largest medieval map of the world in existence, as well as the largest medieval chained library in Europe.

We then make our way to the historic city of Worcester set on the banks of the River Severn. The city is known for its exquisite Royal Worcester porcelain and piquant Worcestershire sauce as well as a magnificent cathedral.

JG3

Hotels with a JG3 rating tend to be a more formal style of hotel, often part of a hotel chain, with a greater range of facilities and services. Bedrooms are a little more spacious and have additional features. Public areas are larger and include lounge seating, a bar and restaurant with good quality food served either buffet style or with waiter service.
