Description
The Peak District is an area of extraordinary natural beauty and home to Britain’s first National Park. We travel through the spectacular landscapes of moorland, rivers and dales to explore picturesque towns and pretty villages such as Bakewell and Matlock Bath. We also step back in time at the Crich Tramway Village and visit the exquisite Chatsworth House, one of Britain’s finest stately homes, for a fantastic break in the glorious countryside
Itinerary
Peak District Breaks & Crich Tramway Village
Bakewell & Chatsworth House (full day)
We head first to the beautiful market town of Bakewell, set on the banks of the River Wye in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Probably best known for its Bakewell Pudding, the town boasts an ancient five arched bridge, riverside walks, independent shops and cafés.
From here we travel to Chatsworth House. Still home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, this magnificent stately home boasts grandiose interiors, a wonderful art collection and 100 acres of garden which include the famous 300-year-old Cascade and enormous Emperor Fountain.
Matlock Bath & Crich Tramway Village (full day)
We take a scenic drive through the Peak District National Park on our way to the picturesque spa town of Matlock Bath, set in the beautiful gorge of the River Derwent with wooded hillsides and rocky limestone crags. The town is a delight to explore, and is truly ‘pleasant beyond expression’ as John Wesley described.
Afterwards we step back in time at the Crich Tramway Village, home of The National Tramway Museum. Ride the world renowned vintage trams through the period street and out into the open countryside for spectacular views, explore fascinating exhibitions and watch as trams are restored from the Workshop Viewing Gallery. Stretch your legs on the Woodland Walk and Sculpture Trail or take a trip to the unique Red Lion Pub, tearooms and shops.
Optional Excursion
Eyam & the High Peaks – £10pp (half day)
Join our optional half-day excursion to enjoy more of the stunning scenery of the Peak District National Park. Our first stop is the atmospheric village of Eyam, known as the ‘Plague Village’ due to the events of 1665-66 when the plague was brought from London to this tiny community. The village has craft workshops, a gift shop and tea rooms to enjoy. We continue on to Castleton, one of the most beautifully-situated villages in the White Peak. The village boasts the impressive Norman ruins of Peveril Castle, underground show caves and is the only place in the world where the semi-precious stone Blue John can be found. We return to the hotel via the village of Sparrowpit in the High Peak area.
