Itinerary

Description

The rugged coastline and scenic countryside of Northumberland is steeped in history, from one of the finest medieval castles in the country to intriguing houses such as Cragside, the dream home of Lord and Lady Armstrong and one of the most technologically advanced homes of the Victorian age.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One - Alnwick Castle & Garden
Still home to the Duke of Northumberland and his family, Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited castle in England. On our guided tour, we explore the history of the Percy family through the eclectic array of furniture and art they collected and displayed in the impressive State Rooms. Alnwick also featured in the hugely popular TV series Downton Abbey. We also enjoy a guided tour of the superlative Alnwick Garden, set around a cascading fountain, and surrounding ‘Capability’ Brown landscape.

Excursion Two - Cragside & Wallington
We head to Cragside, built high into the rock above the clear waters of Debdon Burn. Once the home of Victorian inventor Lord Armstrong, this imposing house is packed to the rafters with fascinating gadgets from the era. It was also the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity and in 2014, a fully-working Archimedes Screw was installed, once again producing enough energy to light the house.

We continue on to Wallington, the much-loved home to generations of the unconventional Trevelyan family. Fans of the Pre-Raphaelites will love Wallington’s Central Hall, decorated to resemble an Italian courtyard. Built towards the close of the 17th century, the rather plain Palladian exterior hides an interior brimming with interest, including wonderful collections of ceramics, paintings and needlework.

Excursion Three - Lindisfarne Castle, Northumberland Heritage Coast & Seaton Delaval Hall
We start with a visit to Lindisfarne Castle which commands a spectacular position, built on a rocky crag high above the sea on Holy Island, lying just a few miles off the Northumberland coast. Only accessible twice a day at low tide, this former fort was converted into an Edwardian holiday home by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and both the military and domestic aspects of the castle are in evidence today.

Afterwards we take a scenic drive along the unspoilt Northumberland Heritage Coast, taking in the stunning vistas, rugged scenery and vast sandy beaches, as we make our way to Seaton Delaval Hall.

Seaton Delaval Hall is an impressive English Baroque mansion built by renowned architect John Vanbrugh in the early 18th century. Once home to the Delaval family who were notorious in Georgian society for their high spirited and flamboyant lifestyle, Seaton Delaval has moved from fortune to misfortune many times through the centuries, surviving terrible fires, military occupation and potential ruin and was saved by the National Trust in 2009.

Please note: Access to Holy Island is limited by tides therefore visiting times will vary.
