Description

Delve into the ancient history of the enigmatic south west on this spectacular tour to Wiltshire. From the ancient Sherborne and Old Wardour castles, whose legacies resound to this day, to the prehistoric sites of Avebury and Stonehenge, this five-day trip transports you back in time to uncover the secrets at the heart of the English countryside and view some of history’s most important artefacts such as the Magna Carta.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One – Sherborne Castle & Old Wardour Castle

We begin with a trip to the remarkable 16th-century Tudor mansion, Sherborne Castle, where we enjoy the first of our guided tours. Built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh and with a landscape garden designed by ‘Capability’ Brown, this English Heritage property has a wealth of stories from significant events throughout its 400-year history for us to discover, including its role during the Civil War and both world wars. We can also view the castle’s diverse collection of furniture, paintings and porcelain which reflect the variety of evolving decorative styles over time.

Next, we travel to Tisbury in peaceful Wiltshire to visit Old Wardour Castle for our second guided tour of the day. Set beside a picturesque lake, this 14th-century castle ruin boasts incredible unspoiled views of the surrounding countryside and a calm atmosphere that feels like you’ve stepped back in time. From the events that took place here during the War of the Roses, to its near destruction during the Civil War, all the way up to its serving as a filming location for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, we discover the secrets behind this fascinating medieval castle.

Excursion Two – Avebury Standing Stones, Alexander Keiller Museum, Wiltshire Museum & Farleigh Hungerford Castle

Today we head to Avebury henge, a World Heritage Site and Neolithic monument featuring an inner circle of huge standing stones and one of the great marvels of ancient Britain. Here we are free to walk among the standing stones and explore the mysterious grounds that were thought to once be a vast sacred landscape and which now include part of Avebury village. The site also features the Alexander Keiller Museum, owned and run by the National Trust and English Heritage. Here we have the opportunity to view the many artefacts included in the museum’s prehistoric archaeological collection, one of the most important of its kind in the UK.

We continue on to the historic market town of Devizes for our visit to the Wiltshire Museum, where we enjoy an award-winning display of the largest collection of Early Bronze Age gold in England as well as 500 artefacts from Stonehenge.

Finally, we travel to the remains of the Farleigh Hungerford Castle in the valley of the River Frome. Here we are treated to a guided tour to learn about the castle’s history, including the story of the Hungerford family who resided here for 300 years right up until the War of the Roses and whose sometimes gruesome past is told through graphic panels on the walls of the castle. There’s also a wealth of other hidden treasures to discover including the chapel, the Priest’s house and the chilling crypt which still contains the best collection of human-shaped lead coffins in Britain.

Excursion Three – Salisbury, Salisbury Cathedral & Stonehenge

We make our way to Salisbury for our guided tour of Salisbury Cathedral. Featured in works of art by John Constable and the inspiration for William Golding’s The Spire, the cathedral is one of the most remarkable in the country thanks to its striking architecture and beautiful surroundings. Our guided tour takes us through the many highlights that make this building truly unique including the unusual nave and unconventional font designed by William Pye. The cathedral also features Britain’s tallest spire, the oldest working modern clock in the world and the best-preserved original copy of the Magna Carta.

We then enjoy some free time in the pretty city of Salisbury, where we can explore the many streets of varied architectural styles that range from medieval walls and half-timbered Tudor town houses to Georgian mansions and Victorian villas.

The highlight of our trip takes us to the world-famous monument of Stonehenge, an ancient and mysterious site which has become a place of pilgrimage for many. Surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of Salisbury Plain, these colossal stones, some weighing around 25 tons, have been the subject of archaeological theories for decades as it is still a mystery how they came to be here. Take the chance to view these enigmatic stones and explore the rest of the site to conclude our excursion in spectacular fashion.
