Itinerary

Description

William Shakespeare is widely regarded as one of the world's greatest playwrights, poets and dramatists. On this lovely weekend break, we head to Shakespeare’s picturesque home town of Stratford-upon-Avon where we join in the fantastic celebrations to commemorate the anniversary of his birth which include performances, parades, folk dancing and street entertainment. We also discover the intriguing and absorbing life story of Shakespeare in the intimate Tudor and Jacobean places he called home and enjoy a behind the scenes tour of the iconic Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Itinerary

Friday: Arrival
We check in to the Stratford Manor Hotel in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

Saturday: Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare’s Birthday Celebrations and Family Homes & Afternoon Tea at Ettington Park Hotel
We head into Stratford-upon-Avon, where we join in the annual celebrations of William Shakespeare’s birthday in the town where he was born in April 1564. We also delve deeper into the world of Shakespeare as we discover some of his family homes, each place with its own fascinating story to tell.

At Shakespeare's Birthplace, we explore the extraordinary story of Shakespeare in the house where he was born and grew up in. We also have a chance to view rare artefacts from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s world class collections.

Shakespeare’s New Place was the family home from 1597 until Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Although the house was demolished in 1759, a beautiful garden has been designed to commemorate the importance of the site with commissioned artworks plus a sunken Knot Garden and exhibition centre.

A short walk away is Hall’s Croft, the elegant Jacobean home of Shakespeare's daughter Susanna and her husband Dr John Hall. The walled garden here is planted with fragrant herbs used in Dr Hall's remedies.

Later we enjoy a traditional afternoon tea of handmade sandwiches, cakes, pastries and scones served with fine loose leaf teas at the Ettington Park Hotel. This neo-Gothic mansion with towering turrets and classic arched windows offers lovely views over 40 acres of beautiful parkland with the River Stour meandering through it.

After dinner this evening, we enjoy an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.

Sunday: Broughton Castle & the Royal Shakespeare Theatre
We make our way to Broughton Castle, a moated and fortified manor house set in lovely gardens and parkland. Home to the 21st Lord and Lady Saye & Sele, Broughton has remained in the same family since 1447 and we enjoy a private tour with the owners, followed by lunch.Much of the original 14th-century house remains including the Great Hall, but most of what we see today dates from the 1550s including magnificent plaster ceilings and splendid panelling. The house was a centre of opposition to Charles I and was besieged and damaged after the Battle of Edgehill in 1642.

In the afternoon, we visit the iconic Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Here we enjoy a guided behind the scenes tour to explore the public and private areas of the theatre. We learn about the theatre making process and see for ourselves how some of it happens, as well as exploring a production in more depth and finding out about the history of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Please note: due to theatre performances, the behind the scenes tour may be substituted for a front of house tour.

Monday: Departure
After breakfast, we check out of the hotel for our journey home.

Please note: the itinerary order is subject to change.
