The dramatic west coast of Scotland is home to a swathe of unspoilt islands full of breathtaking natural beauty, ancient monuments and a diversity of wildlife, with every isle having its own unique character. Mixing the historical and natural appeal of these idyllic Inner Hebridean islands with the architectural splendour of Mount Stuart, the stunning Loch Lomond and the vibrant Scottish city of Glasgow, there’s plenty to capture the imagination on this lovely break!

Day 1 – Flight to Glasgow

We fly to Glasgow airport and take a short walk to the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport where we stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 – Tyndrum & Isle of Mull

Leaving the hotel, we travel up through the stunning Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, stopping en-route in the small village of Tyndrum, situated at the southern edge of Rannoch Moor. The village is home to the attractively eccentric Green Welly Stop which offers a wide range of items for sale, including, you’ve guessed it, green wellies!

We continue our journey to the port town of Oban, known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’, where we catch the afternoon ferry to the Isle of Mull, admiring the scenic landscapes along the way. On arrival, we check in to the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa, our base for the next two nights.

Day 3 – Isle of Mull & Isle of Iona

We start our day with a tour of the Isle of Mull. The second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, its diverse landscape ranges from high mountains and wild moorland, to wave-lashed sea cliffs and sandy beaches. The capital of the island, Tobermory, is one of the prettiest ports in Scotland. The picture-postcard village has a large natural harbour where colourful boats bob on the waves watched over by a rainbow of brightly-painted buildings backed by woodland-fringed hills.

Next, we head to Fionnphort to catch the ferry as foot passengers to the neighbouring Isle of Iona.

This tiny island is only 1.5 miles wide by 3 miles long but is steeped in history, being the cradle of Scottish Christianity. There’s plenty to explore here; ancient historical sites include Iona Abbey, St Oran’s Chapel and the picturesque ruins of Iona Nunnery, while the Iona Heritage Centre provides information on island life over the last few centuries. The island is also home to stunning white shell-sand beaches, turquoise waters and interesting wildlife. Later, we return to the Isle of Mull by ferry.

Day 4 – Inveraray, Loch Lomond & Ayr

We catch the morning ferry back to the mainland. We then make a stop en-route in Inveraray, a traditional town overlooking the calm waters of Loch Fyne. Established by the 3rd Duke of Argyll in 1745, the town offers fine examples of Scottish Georgian architecture. There is plenty to explore during our time at leisure, including the Neoclassical church and Inveraray jail and courthouse, now an award-winning museum which recounts prison conditions throughout the centuries.

We continue our journey, enjoying a scenic drive past the shores of Loch Lomond, the largest expanse of fresh water on mainland Britain. The loch is situated amidst one of Scotland’s most idyllic and unspoilt areas in the Trossachs National Park and boasts a stunning mountain backdrop and a variety of wildlife.

Later, we check in to our hotel in Ayr, a popular resort situated on the Firth of Clyde with a charming seafront esplanade and long sandy beach.

Day 5 – Isle of Bute & Mount Stuart House and Gardens

A special day awaits us as we catch the ferry to the Isle of Bute to visit Mount Stuart House and Gardens. This magnificent 19th-century Neo-Gothic palace was the architectural fantasy of the 3rd Marquess of Bute and his architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. A highlight of this lavishly designed house is the majestic Marble Hall with its vaulted ceiling. Mount Stuart was also one of the most technologically advanced houses of its age, being the first house in Scotland to be purpose built with electric light, central heating and a telephone system. It also houses the Bute Collection, one of the foremost private collections of artwork and artefacts in the UK. Outside, the 300 acres of gardens boast arboricultural and horticultural collections of global significance, with plant species introduced through the centuries.

Before returning to the mainland, we stop to enjoy the beautiful scenery at Scalpsie Bay and Ettrick Bay.

Day 6 – Glasgow

We return to Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, where there’s free time at leisure. Situated on the River Clyde, Glasgow has recently evolved to become a vibrant and cultural city with a mix of striking architectural styles, a rich industrial heritage and a unique Celtic charm.

Later, the coach takes us back to the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport where we stay overnight on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 7 – Journey home

After checking out of the hotel, we take a short walk to Glasgow’s airport terminal for our return flight home.
