Itinerary

Description

The fine historic estates that stud the peaceful fields of East Anglia burst at the seams with royal connections, from atmospheric Blickling Hall to the Sandringham Estate, the much-loved country retreat of Her Majesty The Queen. We also explore the unique and mystical beauty of the Norfolk Broads by paddle steamer.

Coach Itinerary

Excursion One - Sandringham Estate & Sheringham Park
We pay a visit to the house, gardens and museum of the Sandringham Estate, the country retreat of Her Majesty the Queen. Built in 1870, Sandringham has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs. The interiors are home to many astonishing exhibits such as an important collection of oriental arms and armour while the walls are hung with family portraits by leading contemporary court painters. The mostly informal gardens include woodland walks, rockeries, magnificent sweeping lawns, lakes and streams and the more formal North Garden. The museum, housed in the former coach houses and stable block, holds extraordinary collections of Royal vehicles, rare ceramics, photographs and memorabilia.

Set in almost a thousand acres, the landscaped splendour of Sheringham Park was designed by Humphry Repton in 1812. We have time at leisure to enjoy these mature woodland gardens, with their rare trees and shrubs and extensive collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. The park boasts miles of scenic countryside paths and stunning coastal vistas from the viewing towers.

Excursion Two - Norfolk Broads Cruise & Felbrigg Hall
We make our way to the picturesque village of Horning where we embark on a memorable Norfolk Broads cruise on the Mississippi Paddle Steamer. A unique and beautiful landscape of shallow lakes and rivers, these spectacular waterways are scattered with pretty market towns and villages along its shores. We’ll also be able to look out for the local wildlife with stunning views from the top deck of the steamer as it carries us on our leisurely journey down the tranquil River Bure.

We then travel to Felbrigg Hall, one of East Anglia’s finest country houses, set in extensive parkland. Felbrigg’s interior is a lavish blend of sumptuous furniture, ornate plasterwork and William Wyndham II’s painting collection, gathered on his Grand Tour of Europe. The rolling landscape park with a lake, woods and miles of way-marked trails is a great place to explore nature and spot wildlife.

Excursion Three - Blickling Hall & East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden
Blickling Hall is one of our finest Jacobean houses, set at the heart of a magnificent garden and historic park. In decorative terms it’s a wonderful house to explore because of its plasterwork and superb Long Gallery. However, there’s little doubt that Blickling’s Boleyn connections (not least tales of Anne Boleyn’s headless ghost) add hugely to the atmosphere here. We’ll join an expert guide for a fascinating tour of this magnificent Hall.

Afterwards, we pay a visit to the privately owned East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden, a wonderful coastal garden covering 32 acres that incorporates exuberant and innovative planting alongside more traditional, formal design. From the Dutch Garden to the Desert Wash Garden (and more), there are many rare and unusual plants as well as sculptures, lavishly planted pots and fine detailed gates and walls. Mixed hedgerows, wildflower areas and ponds have also been added to replace wildlife habitat that had been lost.
